Subject: Gift Retention Date: Mon, 13 Jun 1994 14:46:45 -0400 (EDT) In reply to Judith Falzon's question about gift book retention... As a state university, we can't dispose of library materials ourselves so all gift materials are donated to the Friends of the Libraries. The Friends gives each donor an acknowledgement receipt of the number of hardbacks and paperbacks for tax purposes. As an interested party in the transaction, they can't assign a value to donated items. A donor, within the extent of the law, can assign a value to donated materials up to a dollar limit, afterwards an independent assessor must determine the value of the materials. (Check with your local accountant but I think you can claim around $400 in donations without filing additional tax paperwork. I'm going from memory so don't quote me.) Those materials the Libraries wishes to retain are added to our collections. Those we don't want are kept by Friends for their bi-annual book sale. Proceeds from the booksale go to the Libraries.
