Maybe this has been discussed elsewhere and I missed it, but what is intended by "avoid sharp practice"? (2)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Christian M. Boissonnas (Cornell University) Subject: Contentious Issues Date: Thu, 13 Jan 1994 09:58:43 -0500 This year's Charleston Conference allowed both libraries and publishers ample time to complain about the results of economic hardship. The Conference also had a session called "Contentious Issues". As often happens, a week or so after the conference, a subject occurred to me that I wish I'd raised during that session. It relates directly back to the economic issue and it's a great example of libraries and publishers butting heads to the detriment of both. The issue is pre-publication announcements. I'm talking about those titles which the publisher chooses to announce when they are little more than gleams in their editor's eye. I'm talking about those open orders on your system which you claim, update, worry over, and make phone calls about every few months, sometimes for years. Has anyone ever done a study to calculate how much money this kind of long-term order maintenance costs libraries? Does anyone else get the feeling that sometimes announcements can be little more than fishing expeditions? Do publishers realize that fishing expeditions soak up valuable library resources that we would rather spend on published books? (4)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Deborah O. Lee (Mississippi State Univ.) Subject: Overseas phone books Date: Fri, 14 Jan 1994 08:16:27 -0500 I need to purchase the phone books for the London and Paris metropolitan areas. Is there a phone fiche equivalent for Europe? Has anyone acquired these phone books on a continuing basis and at what cost? (5)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Nancy Gibbs (NC State Univ.) Subject: ALA meeting Date: Wed, 12 Jan 1994 16:56:47 -0500 ALCTS: Role of the Professional in Academic Research Technical Services Departments Discussion Group, ALA Midwinter Meeting, Sunday, February 6, 1994, 2-4 PM, at the Los Angeles Convention Center, Room 507. Topic: 21st Century Technical Services : Is it coming before you think?? Will It Include: Contract Acquisitions? Contract Cataloging? Contract Collection Development? Our speakers will be Seno Lawskowski, Head of Cataloging at the University of Alberta (where they have a contract for cataloging); Keith Schmiedl, President of Coutts Library Service, Inc. (who provides contract cataloging for libraries); and Gary Shirk, Chief Information Officer of Yankee Book Peddler (who has written recently in _LAPT_ about contract acquisitions). We hope for a lively discussion from an international cast of speakers centered around the decision process to begin a contract in technical services, the evaluation process, and the effects these decisions have on staff, patrons, and budgets.
