Some of the databases are searchable, while others are not (i.e., there are varying degrees of access). Last time I looked, there were 23 pointers to publishers' catalogs (Canada, US, UK, and Netherlands) via the U. Saskatchewan gopher. You can get to the University of Saskatchewan Publishers' Catalogs listing by pointing your local gopher client to: gopher.usask.ca, port 70, and burroughing in through the following directories: Library/Useful Non-U of S Library Information/Publishers' Catalogues. (3)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: E. Gaele Gillespie (University of Kansas) Subject: CD-ROM vendors Date: Tue, 16 Nov 1993 00:02:21 -0500 In answer to Emily Hutton's inquiry re: CD-ROM vendors: Since we have an account with UMI for microforms subscriptions, all UMI CD-ROMs that we purchase on a subscription basis are ordered directly from UMI. They frequently change their rate structure for networking fees, and, as is also true with SilverPlatter, the marketing staff will give you information that is different from what the customer services staff will quote you, which sometimes bears absolutely *no* relationship to what the resulting invoice reflects. No matter who supplies your CD-ROMs, the invoices should be scrutinized very carefully due to how complex the mix of fees and discounts can be for certain products (multiple-copy and multiple- subscriber discounts, membership discounts, discounts for concurrent subscription to the print ed., and networking fees). We have a number of CD-ROM subscriptions directly with the information producer/publisher (SilverPlatter, CD Plus, Bowker/whomever/whomever, Dialog, etc.) This is mainly because our earliest subscriptions were placed directly until we got a handle on the way in which they fulfilled our orders, how they invoiced, how the license agreements had to be handled, etc. As far as dealing direct, SilverPlatter is better organized than the others, but I say this with many grains of salt, as it's like choosing the lesser of many evils. About 3 yrs. ago we also began using UPDATA in Los Angeles. Herb Sclar, UPDATA's president, worked at Dialog for many years, so he knows the industry and which people to contact to obtain the best results. Since UPDATA creates invoices using PCs, they can customize your invoice, work out common expire dates, etc. If an IP/publisher's flyer states a discount that isn't listed in UPDATA's catalog (and they have a very fine catalog, by the way), they will honor it. There have been times when Herb has found and passed on to us discounts that we were unaware of on this end when we placed the order. As with any capable vendor, using UPDATA's services means you don't have to mess with all the vagaries of dealing with multiple sources. As UPDATA's business has increased, Herb has carefully increased staffing, and overall, we've received fairly prompt and accurate responses to our claims and other inquiries. UPDATA seems to have learned very quickly how to work well with academic libraries, and I can attest that Herb truly incorporates the feedback he receives from his coustomers. The only complaint I've had is that it has not worked well with UPDATA trying to act as the "middle man" in the license agreement end of things -- a couple of times copies of signed agreements didn't get passed on to the IP or publisher, which delayed our receipt of the product. I now do all the license agreement backing & forthing direct, even if the order is placed through UPDATA. If you have any specific questions, I'd be happy to talk with you or you can e-mail me directly. (4)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Marsha S. Clark (NY Acad. of Medicine) Subject: O.P. Art Books Date: Wed, 17 Nov 1993 09:17:42 -0500 I would suggest calling HACKER ART BOOKS, 212-688-7600 and THE STRAND BOOK STORE, 212-473-1452. The Strand also has a fax number 212-473-2591. I used these two stores when I was at NYU and was able to locate materials although they tended to be more expensive than many other types of out of print books. (5)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Doug DeLong (Illinois State Univ.) Subject: _PC World_ Microfilm Date: Tue, 23 Nov 1993 15:38:48 -0500 We recently were asked to switch our UMI microfilm subscription for _PC WORLD_ from the "regular" edition to the "Lotus" edition. We were told by UMI that they did not have rights to the "Lotus" edition. We are providing UMI with information on the "Lotus" edition; if other libraries would also like the microfilm edition to be of the "Lotus" edition I would suggest you contact your UMI rep. ****** END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 3, No. 89 ****** END OF FILE ******
