(2)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: October Ivins (Louisiana State Univ.) Subject: Bowker/Reed Networking Date: Mon, 11 Oct 93 08:42:00 CDT Some of you pioneers who haggled with Bowker (now Reed Reference Publishing) about CD ROM networking options and contracts deserve thanks from those of us newer to the process. I checked the contract I handled in April 1993 to network _BIP Plus_ and _Ulrich's_. Rates and use for 1-4 simultaneous users at 1.5 the base price and for 5-10 users at 2 times the base price seem to be standard. I didn't check to see exactly what we said about dial-in users; I think we just considered them in the overall total. This issue was also hotly debated at the last two Bowker Library Advisory Board meetings that I attended. I won't be able to attend the one coming up in early November, but would be glad to pass along any feedback/ complaints or even compliments (what a concept!) you may wish to convey. (3)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Trisha Davis (Ohio State Univ.) Subject: _BIP Plus_ trauma Date: Tue, 12 Oct 93 15:59:21 EDT I spent over 6 months trying to get _BIP Plus_ networked for Ohio State University Library and did succeed, but my staff thought I might commit heinous crimes in the process! Bowker/Reed,Martindale Hubbell (whoever!) was very inflexible about networking this product. Their "limited use multi-user network" license is written for use in a specified number of buildings with a specified number of simultaneous users. Needless to say, that did not work for OSUL. I finally got them to substitute "1 campus, up to 4 simultaneous users". They still threatened us with serious price hikes if we cancelled even one print copy. We also suffered a 4-month ordeal in changing one of our CD subscriptions to _BIP Plus_ with _Abstracts Plus_. They cancelled both our copies, switched our credits, then lost our credits and then tried to tell me that I told them to do it! All I wanted was an invoice and the product, but it took literally months and months of phone calls to irritable people to straighten out the mess. So, good luck and don't expect easy negotiations! (4)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Carol Chamberlain (Northeastern University) Subject: ALCTS bylaws Date: Thu, 14 Oct 1993 16:27:12 -0500 (EST) ACQNET readers may be interested to know that at the end of the ALA New Orleans meeting the Acquisitions Section Executive Committee voted to oppose the motion brought to the ALCTS Board regarding the proposed Bylaws. While the Acquisitions Section leaders support the goals of the reorganization efforts, the majority of the 1992-93 Section Executive Committee believed that there are serious concerns about the issue of empowerment. Some Committee members felt that the organization as reflected in the proposed Bylaws does not empower the membership and that it does the opposite of the Task Force's stated intent. Carol Chamberlain, Past-Chair, Acquisitions Section. (5)------------------------------------------------------------------------ From: Lee Bracken (Harvard University) Subject: Subscription agents Date: Fri, 15 Oct 1993 09:34:12 -0400 Your input will be most appreciated as I am exploring the possibility of transferring many of our periodicals (over 1500 paid; over 700 free, exchange, through membership, mailing list, etc.) and our serials (annuals and semiannuals - over 2000 paid and over 2000 free, exchange, etc. etc.) to an agent or agents. We currently use Ebsco and Turner for a small portion of this quantity. Everything else is ordered direct. My experience has been in a corporate setting, using mostly Faxon and one year Ebsco. I want to find out more about the experience of others, particularly in academic institutions. 1. What agent(s) do you recommend? Not recommend? Why? 2. Have you used U.S. agents for foreign publications? How has it worked out? 3. What has been your experience giving annual/semiannual publication business to an agent? 4. Is there information about the cost analysis of ordering a publication direct versus through an agent? I realize that these questions, at least the first three, cover broad topics. Your brief as well as lengthy responses will be very much appreciated. If sending a message directly to me will ensure a frank and candid response, please do so. Thank you for your support.
