For those who don't know already, CD HotList is a "heads-up" that I (as a full-time librarian and part-time music critic) issue to you, my friends and colleagues, each month. I profile 12-15 new releases that strike me as being of potential interest to libraries, in genres ranging from classical to rock. Full ordering info is provided for each entry. As always, comments and suggestions are more than welcome. -------- Rick Anderson Head Acquisitions Librarian Jackson Library UNC Greensboro (336) 334-5281 rick_anderson@uncg.edu (3)-------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 02 May 2000 11:50:08 -0400 From: Rob Richards (Univ. of CO Law Library) Subject: RE: Vendor's Statistical Reporting for Electronic Resources Greetings: Many thanks to Kara Phillips for directing me to the report I was seeking: International Coalition of Library Consortia (ICOLC), GUIDELINES FOR STATISTICAL MEASURES OF USAGE OF WEB-BASED INDEXED, ABSTRACTED, and FULL TEXT RESOURCES (November 1998) http://www.library.yale.edu/consortia/webstats.html ALSO: Thank you, too, to Ann Okerson for referring me to the ICOLC site. Aside from _ Booklist_, _Choice_, _Library Journal_, etc., what other tools are there that evaluate or make you aware of these materials? Are there any good web sites? Do any of you have criteria established you use to guide selection of these materials? I have a friend who just landed in her first public library and she seems even more panicked than I am about these decisions, so any and all help for either of us would be terrific---on a sunny day with the lilacs blooming ... We have been in touch with a few vendors...all of whom charge for an archival copy...or charge a fee for a library to MAKE one themselves. I'm sure some of you out there have dealt with this issue and could give me some advice. We are interpreting the copyright law for our benefit and so it would seem are the vendors. Any advice? Please respond privately. The University of North Carolina Press is experimenting, as are other university presses, with companies that will provide copies of out-of-stock or previously out-of-print books on demand. Our supposition is that these books will not be manufactured to the same standards that meet archival and preservation standards of libraries (acid free paper, library binding, etc.). I wonder if that matters as much to libraries as the ability to get a copy of a hard-to-find book for a patron? Also, have any of you ordered any books on demand from either Lightning Print (a subsidiary of Ingram) or from Replica Books (owned by Baker & Taylor)? Any comments regarding their service and these questions would be most helpful. Thank you.
