I'm glad to say they have started up again under the management of Deborah Dodge. Thanks to those of you who responded. I'd like to comment on that aspect and also give a list of a few more bookstore websites that are useful. We have been using web based bookstores for a while now and have not had many problems working things out with most of the bookdealers. Most are willing to fill out the W9 form (required by our state and by quite a few other (all?) states as well) and most are willing to hold for arrival of check. Many are more than willing to ship with invoice and with W9 form, which is wonderful. I have had at least one vendor tell me that she was royally ripped off by one of the libraries and therefore would no longer ship with invoice to any library, which is very sad. I'm also hearing from libraries that more and more of them are getting approval to have and use credit cards, so there's hope on the horizon. Other bookstore web sites that are useful and some of which search more than one bookstore include: http://www.bookfinder.com (compares costs and does not give you the complete list of all books found... always a good idea to go look at the individual websites and make sure you've found all of the copies you need and the best condition) http://www.alibris.com (they do have a hefty markup and there's some controversy over using this website, due to business practices) http://www.powells.com (one of my favorites, shipping and handling waived if order is over $50, and wonderful customer service. You can set up an account with them and just pay the account monthly) http://www.booksearchengine.com/ http://www.abebooks.com/ http://www.bookcloseouts.com/ This bookweb site is wonderful, but is best for recently remaindered items and for best-sellers or not-so-best sellers. Good way to find popular fiction that someone asks for three years after it has gone out of print. I have received several invoices for supplements to standing orders with shipping and handling charges. The invoice for the standing order in most cases includes the shipping and handling for supplements; therefore these charges are incorrect. I have been receiving these types of erroneous invoices for several months. Finally Gale has acknowledged that the shipping and handling for the supplement was covered by the standing order payment for the latest edition/volume. They are not sending out any information about their "system problem" to the customers. It seems that we must catch these errors ourselves and request that the invoice be corrected by customer service. Subject: Fwd: GIFT POLICY Our policy for accepting gifts has been very open because of limited materials budgeting. Also, our acquisitions person is also the manager of gift receipts and processing due to staff reductions. The problem is that many of our donors are asking us to appraise their donations for tax purposes. There was a very good article in Library Journal in 1989 which spelled out the tax liability situation for libraries. We provide a copy of this information to our donors, but they seem to ignore it because it is 11 years old. Does anyone know a source of updated information on appraisal of book donations and tax liability? Joy D. In FY 1998-99 we acquired between 1300-1400 monographic titles as gifts, exchanges or purchases. We currently subscribe to 2000 journals. Acquisitions personnel include one full time professional (me), one full time paraprofessional serials specialist, one part time clerk (serials check-in) and 2 part time volunteers. In cataloging there are 2 full time professionals for monographs, one part time serials cataloger, one full time paraprofessional. We use Innovative Interfaces software, and we do not use a book jobber (our field is too specialized). We do not have room in the budget to hire another person. I am reviewing work-flow from the identification/selection of materials through ordering, receiving and cataloging. Because we are not a university library we cannot depend on student employees. If you have workflow charts, plans or ideas that you would be willing to share with me, please respond off list. Thank you. Donald Wheeler Acquisitions Librarian The LuEsther T.
