These are bogus generic compilations and have nothing directly to do with your state. It is an inexcusable act of false advertising, and I will try to pursue this further. [ED. Examples: Last year one of the campus provosts gave us $5000 to establish a multicultural collection -- books and videos -- at a new campus. They are shelved in a separate location. There is no money to maintain the collection, unless it comes out of our regular materials funds. We also need to establish policies and procedures for the new DVD format materials. These two examples are different in that we *have* to do the second in order to support the curriculum but the first was a *monetary gift* -- we did the selection of materials. Primary issues include maintaining the collection with funds, intershelving -- or not -- with the main collection, special labels and/or OPAC displays. Actually the latter two are not the biggies; it's how to inform persons who want a special collection shelved separately with a special designation in the OPAC that there's a lot more to it than they might think. We do have a checklist of what's involved in setting up a new collection in our automated system. What we want is a checklist or guidelines that a librarian can go over with a potential donor. We would like this to be similar to our gift acceptance policy in the sense that we can accept the materials (or money) but we decide whether to retain the materials (or how to shelve them).
