We offer the question on ACQNET as well.] Date: Wed, 08 Dec 1999 09:35:47 -0500 From: Robert Bland (Univ. of NC-Asheville) Subject: Microfilm pricing I would like to get some reaction from the list concerning the rapidly escalating price of periodical back files in microform. Our average price per title for microform subscriptions from UMI has almost doubled over a 5 year period. This significantly exceeds the rate of price rise for the print subscriptions. What is the experience of other libraries in this matter, and what, if anything, are you doing about it? Now that we have new space, we have begun to do more binding, but this is at best a short-term solution. Thanks. It would be helpful if people could fax me copies of your job descriptions, with a note about size of library budget and salary range. For comparison, our library has a materials budget of about $500,000, with one permanent full time and one temporary part time person, and I am more like a purchasing agent than a collections development manager. I am interested in similar job descriptions, but would also like to hear from people in different situations for the sake of placing this position in the continuum of acquisitions people. Swetman (Hamilton College) Subject: Obtaining Music Recordings We have been using Audio Buff for our music recordings for years. I've been surprised at the short notice that they are going out of business. I would appreciate any recommendations for good suppliers of music recordings. I've tried searching the archives but can't quite figure out the syntax. [Ed. Note: go to AcqWeb for this] Thanks, B.E. Subject: Tech Services Reorganization Greetings, I am a member of a task force at a large academic library that has been charged with improving the efficiency of acquiring and cataloging monographic materials. We are contemplating the possibility of merging the acquisitions and cataloging sections for monographs in order to increase productivity. Would anyone who has worked in a combined acquisitions/cataloging environment at a large research library be willing to share their experiences with us? Please reply directly to me nxw@psulias.psu.edu so as not to clog up the list. Thank you for your time. ________________________________________________________________________ Nancy E. Subject: Table of Contents Notes In some ways this is more of a cataloging question than an acquisitions one, but since we are so heavily involved with receiving processed materials and doing push-button cataloging here in our acquisitions department, I pose the question here first: Can any of you recommend a service which provides Table of Contents notes? What are the strong points, weak points? Of course I have heard of a couple but would like to have some first-hand information from librarians who utilize a particular service. Thank you for any assistance you can give me.
