Accompanying the volumes was a letter from the publisher which began "We have good news for you...." After describing the value of the set and the process of compiling it, the letter ends in this way: As a subscriber to the Dutch Bibliography, you thus have a balanced cata- logue at your disposal, offering a wealth of information on a key period in Dutch (cultural) history. We trust that you will use this publication with pleasure. A beautiful gift, right? NOT! A letter from our vendor for _Brinkman's Cumulatieve Catalogus van Boeken_ informs us that we owe them $1,270.00. They want to know immediately (by return fax) if we want the set. If we don't want it, they instruct us to return it unmarked to their US office. It has always been my understanding that unsolicited material is yours to keep free of charge. Our reference department would be delighted to have this set, as would our Western European bibliographer. But we strongly object to the way it is being distributed (marketed?). I have been directed to tell the vendor that, if they want to arrange for pick up of the volumes at no expense to the library, they may have it back. Have others of you received this set? What did you do about it? What would you have done if you *had* received it? (3)------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 May 93 08:36:57 -0400 From: Maggie Rioux (Woods Hole Oceanographic Inst.) Subject: Request for help on acquiring an Indonesian book I am trying to find a dealer (preferably U.S.) who can handle an Indonesian acquisition for us. We checked with International Specialized Book Service, which is generally good for that part of the world, but they couldn't help. The book is _Tropical Reef Fishes of the Western Pacific and Adjacent Waters_ by Rudi H. Kunter. Jakarta: Gramedia Pustaka Utama, 1992. The reference was in a "New Books Accepted" column in a sample issue we received of a new journal (Tropical Biodiversity) also published in Indonesia. Does anyone know of a dealer we can go through? If not a dealer, does anyone have an address or fax number for the publisher? Please reply either directly to me or to ACQNET. These screenplays are for the video/motion picture version -- not play scripts. Could anyone suggest vendors? The faculty member has given me as the source Tams-Witrock and Mus. Theater Inter [sic]. I have not been able to find these companies. (5)------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 May 93 14:42:12 EDT From: Richard Jasper (Emory University) Subject: EPDG ANNOUNCEMENT IMPLICATIONS OF ELECTRONIC PUBLISHING TO BE ADDRESSED IN NEW ORLEANS Views from a commercial scientific-technical-medical (STM) journal publisher and a noted library educator will be presented at the Electronic Publishing Discussion Group's meeting at the American Library Association Annual Conference in New Orleans. EPDG, which is part of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS), is scheduled to meet 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., Sunday, June 27, in the Room 13 of the New Orleans Convention Center. Bob Badger, manager of electronic media for Springer-Verlag Inc. of New York, and Dr. S. Michael Malinconico, a professor in the School of Library and Information Studies at the University of Alabama, will present their ideas on "Electronic Publishing: The Implications for Libraries and Librarians." Their talks follow up the discussion of electronic publishing and proprietary obstacles set forth by Ann Okerson at EPDG's Midwinter Conference meeting in Denver. Badger's work on the Red Sage Project, a collaborative effort involving Springer, Bell Labs, and the University of California, San Francisco, was featured in a March issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education. Malinconico, meanwhile, has written on the impact technology is having on the preparation of current and future librarians in such publications as the Journal of Education for Library and Information Science (JELIS). The Badger-Malinconico talks are conceived as the first in a series of viewpoints to be presented over the next two or three ALA conferences. Tentative plans are being made for additional talks from a variety of stakeholders, including representatives from the university press, faculty, vendor and library communities. The New Orleans EPDG meeting will also see the election of a vice-chair/chair-elect of the group. To submit nominations or for more information about the meeting, please contact me.
