We maintain a log of usage to keep a record of the card's use. We have experienced no problems using the card thus far. (6)------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Apr 93 15:57:57 -0700 From: Marylou Hale (University of Nevada - Las Vegas) Subject: Staff access to Internet I have been following the staff access to Internet discussion with great interest. As one of the staff in the trenches using the Internet for my job, I can say a big "Thank you" to our administrators for encouraging us to get Internet accounts and training. My job has become increasingly more difficult, but with Internet access, I feel that I have been provided with the most up-to-date tools to perform my job effectively and efficiently. If I fail to use these, my own methods and knowledge quickly become outdated. And, as one of the many overworked staff in the library profession, I really don't have the time and energy to park in front of the computer screen and read things not relevant to my job. To those folks thinking about granting access, I say give it a try. To do otherwise is, in my opinion, depriving your staff of something that might make their jobs easier. (7)------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1993 12:27 EDT From: David Marshall (Georgetown University) Subject: Staff use of the Internet Here at Georgetown, there has been much consideration given to developing staff expertise for emerging technologies. Over the last year or so this issue has been addressed in three formal documents - our strategic plan, our automation plan, and the revised library policies handbook. The latter document states that all staff should have access to a computer to be used for "Library-related functions such as electronic mail and word processing." Included in the same document is the caveat that "Staff are reminded that the Library's personal computers are intended for Library- related business, not for personal use." To date, there has been no reported incidence of abuse anywhere in the Library. Both full-time staff and students have been ordering over the Internet for almost a year now. Maybe they have not been fully aware of all they can do over the Internet once connected? But what ever the problems, this is the immediate future with which we managers will have to learn to deal. ****** END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 3, No. 44 ****** END OF FILE ******
