We have a high proportion of sci/tech titles (80%). The major increases are concentrated, as usual, along the Pergamon/Elsevier/Springer axis. Ranges by departments are as follows: Humanities-0-11% Soc Sciences-2-14% Sci/Tech-16-37% We'll have more detailed information by the end of the week. (2)------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Mar 1993 11:09 PST From: Nancy Slight-Gibney (Santa Clara Univ.) Subject:Serial prices Regarding serials price increases: At Santa Clara University we are now estimating a 9% increase for 1993 over 1992 which is somewhat lower than we expected last fall. We are primarily an undergraduate library with graduate programs in professional areas of Business, Engineering, and Counseling Psychology. We purchase a smaller percentage of foreign titles than a research library. The 9% increase is for all of our serials, including periodicals, annuals, and monographic series. (3)------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Mar 93 08:33:44 EST From: William Jarvis (Washington State Univ.) Subject: Books from India, allergens in books This is just a theory: Given the "no pesticides in use" claim, I'd hazard a guess that ocean shipment of paper from India grows musty molds? Dermatological reactions are not unheard of, and you wouldn't have to see molds to get a reaction. (4)------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Wednesday, 31 March 1993, 10:15:30 EST From: Martin Cohen (McGill University) Subject: Pesticides in Indian Books I just read Wayne Perryman's and Agnes Quigg's messages on the above topic. It looks as if, in this case, Grace Slick's advice was no good: DON'T ask Alice. Arrange for an assay to be done yourself. Remember, these shipments are from the nice folks who brought us Bhopal. As far as masks and gloves are concerned: well, it's a stopgap solution - like doing neurosurgery with a rusty penknife and then applying a Band-Aid - but it doesn't answer the fundamental question. Something is being sprayed or sprinkled over these Indian books - WHAT? I wouldn't style myself as an eco-freak - but in this case I think we should be pulling out all the stops to find out what the contaminant is and then getting the supplier to stop using it; there must be less noxious substitutes. Remember, this is the well-being of our staff we're talking about - a sight more important than some books from India. My offer still holds good: when I get the results of the assay being done at McGill, I'll share it with all of you. In the meantime, if anybody out there can get an assay completed before McGill does, great, and I hope you'll do the same about sharing with the rest of us. In the meantime, I suggest (without wanting to horn in on the management of your departments) that you stow the books somewhere far, far away from people until we know what chemical is in use and what harm it can do. This is what McGill is doing; and our users, I fear, will simply have to live with it. (5)------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Mar 93 16:28:53 EST From: William Jarvis (Washington State Univ.) Subject: Research into Acq implementation in mid-FY. I am researching some of the perils (& joys?) of implementing acquisitions system in mid-fiscal year, rather than on the first day of an institution's fiscal year. My impression is that fund accounting is an area to focus on here. My interest is in serials as well as monographs. Tell me your stories and give me your advice please, on ACQNET and/or directly to me. I would appreciate both names and addresses both.
