The fact is, nothing has happened, and that is precisely the problem: I haven't sent any issues because nobody has written. Some subscribers told me what a wonderful resource ACQNET was and that they hated to miss any. At ALA not a day passed that colleagues didn't echo these statements. It is gratifying and a little humbling to know that something with which I am involved impacts positively on the profession. However the same people who praise ACQNET as a resource overlook one important point: It is only a resource to the extent that subscribers contribute information, and the fact is that people are contributing less and asking more questions. By this time last year I had sent 15 issues. This issue is our fifth this year. I don't know what is happening, whether it is cyclical or not, or whether I am not doing something I should. ACQNET was always meant to be an interactive medium but, in the final analysis, what it is really depends on you. If you want it to be a resource for you, then you've got to make it a resource for others. Or, as my wife said: "If you want to read them you've got to write them." I have been using listservs to complement my lectures and ACQNET is one of my favorites. My former students preferred ACQNET to chatty AUTOCAT and thought that they learned more here, thanks to Christian's editing. We will be covering acquisitions next 2 weeks. So please be gentle with them and show them the way! In fact, this might be the only chance they have to learn the power of skywriting (my course is the only one that requires students to use Internet), and they might not have the chance again if they work in small libraries somewhere in the boondocks before NREN gets to them! Hearty thanks...... Has anyone calculated cost figures for their library that they would be willing to reveal? I am also interested in finding a cost study model that could be applied in this library. (5)---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 01 Feb 93 10:26 CDT From: Gene Dewey (University of Wisconsin) Subject: SOURCES FOR NON-TRADE AUSTRALIAN IMPRINTS In December the University of Wisconsin-Madison Library received information about handling charges for non-trade publications from the Australian dealer we have used for many years. The handling charge is A$15.75 for single copy orders, which seems to be exorbitant. I would appreciate information on Australian dealers used by other research libraries for Australian monographic imprints and particularly what handling charges are applied to such imprints. (7)---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 02 Feb 93 17:01 EST From: Carol P. Hawks (Ohio State University) Subject: Deadline Reminder for LAPT Research Award FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Just a reminder that the deadline for submission of proposals for the _Library Acquisitions: Practice & Theory_ 1993 Research Award is February 15, 1993. The LAPT Editorial Office address has changed. Please use the address which follows for all proposals: 2129 Sandston Road, Columbus, OH 43220 1993 RESEARCH AWARD LIBRARY ACQUISITIONS: PRACTICE & THEORY The Library Acquisitions: Practice & Theory (LAPT) Research Award provides an annual prize of $1,000 for research in the broad areas of acquisitions, serials, publishing, and collection management. The award will be given for one proposal and administered in two parts: $500 when the proposal is selected to fund the research effort and $500 when the completed manuscript is submitted to _Library Acquisitions: Practice & Theory_. The award will be granted to the individual, not the institution, and may be used to cover expenses incurred in conducting the research outlined in the winning proposal, including travel, postage, staff support, supplies, and other items. The winning proposal will identify a critical issue in acquisitions, serials, publishing, or collection management and outline a rigorous approach to testing or solving the issue raised. Proposals will be judged on their significance, clarity and originality. The proposal should be a brief, concise description (no more than 500 words) of the project. A budget proposal and a one page vita of the author must be attached. Awards will not be limited to experienced researchers; however, researchers should present their proposal clearly addressing the following issues: 1. What are the aims and objectives of the research proposal? 2. Please describe your methodology and data analysis procedures. 3. What related research has been undertaken and/or published? Please include specific citations. 4. Is the research replication of a previous study? The deadline for submitting proposals is February 15, 1993. Proposals will be reviewed by a panel consisting of the editor-in-chief, the assistant editors, and three members of the editorial board. The winning proposal will be announced at the annual American Library Association Conference (in New Orleans in 1993) and in the fourth issue of LAPT for the year. Research for the winning proposal must be completed within one year of the date when the award is announced. _Library Acquisitions: Practice & Theory_ reserves the right of first refusal of the completed manuscript.
