It has now been restored. Let me know if you need instructions again. (3)---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: November 16, 1992 From: Christian Subject: Tricia Vierra, formerly Tricia Masson Tricia wrote recently and asked me to let her friends on ACQNET know about her change of status and her new e-mail address. She has resumed using her old maiden name and she says: "For the compassionate (or merely curious), the name change does not signify a life transition. Simply ... [that,] after 11 years, I decided to undertake the hassle of legally reclaiming my birth name." Tricia's new e-mail address is: TVIERRA@AUVM.BITNET. Rose (SUNY-Buffalo) Subject: Videodisks purchasing In response to Elisabeth Dolby's question about videos: We occasionally use American Overseas Book Company, 550 Walnut St., Norwood, NJ 07648 201-767-7600, Despite the name, they are very good at acquiring videos in the medical area, although I'm sure they service other areas as well. (5)---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 29 Oct 92 15:45:27 EST From: Pamela M. Rose (SUNY-Buffalo) Subject: Insurance for returns Our University has the ability to send things UPS through our central mail facility, charged to our budget, with everything insured. We use an internal "outgoing shipment form" listing all relevant information. (6)---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 29 Oct 92 15:47:24 EST From: Pamela M. Rose (SUNY-Buffalo) Subject: Discounts on serials We have recently seen several vendor "special offers" for specific editions at large discounts of items that we have on standing order. In each case, I have called my vendor, indicated the competing offer, and have gotten the deal matched. I guess it depends on your vendor, and how much business you do during the year. So far, we have made very few actual changes to any standing order titles because of special offers, only when we can consistently buy at a reduced rate. But, I do follow them all up in some fashion. (7)---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 30 Oct 1992 16:20:11 -0700 (MST) From: Christopher Sugnet (University of Arizona) Subject: Solicitation for Reviewers To: CRI@CORNELLC.BITNET The ALCTS ALMS Guides Subcommittee is in the process of reviewing a new Guide to the Acquisition of Materials in Electronic Format. We are looking for a few good reviewers who have expertise in acquiring CDROM video, databases and software and would volunteer to screen the draft Guide (40 pages) by late December. We are looking for both stylistic and substantive critique. The Guide includes sections on Selection, Major Issues (Lease and Purchase, Licensing, Copyright, Hardware, Preservation, etc.) and Mechanics of the order process. We have sent review copies out to a small number of ALA Committees, but would like to hear from the trenches too. If you are interested in reviewing this document, or would like to know more about it before volunteering, contact Chris Sugnet at the University of Arizona Acquisitions Dept.: SUGNET@CCIT.ARIZONA.EDU or call (602)621-2699. We hope to get the Guide in final form at MidWinter for publication by ALA in 1993 if all goes well. Thanks in advance. (8)---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 03 Nov 92 15:14:40 CST From: Charles Harmon (ALA) Subject: Adding galleys to collections What are the legal implications (if any) of adding advance reading copies and uncorrected galley proofs to the collection? A reader I know is asking this question. This person works in an academic library and they have faculty members who donate these. Ethical implications are also of interest to the reader, but legal implications are of more immediate concern. (9)---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 4 Nov 92 10:27:01 CST From: Emily Chen (University of Texas) Subject: A-V tools for teaching languages In reply to Elizabeth Dolby's question, I saw a demo booth in ALA this year that produces various languages learning audio visual tools. CALI Inc. is the name. They work with IBM to make multi-media language kit. Their phone number is 801-226-6886. ******* END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 2, No. 102 ****** END OF FILE *******
