Issues which come back undelivered are always a source of frustration. I usually don't know whose issue it is and must figure it out from the message header or some totally unhelp- ful message from the relevant postmaster. Most of those people must have worked for the Postal Service at one time or another. There seems to be two main causes why they come back: One, your disk is full. Two, your system has died. You can't do much about the latter, but you can about the former. My policy is to try ONCE to send a returned issue back to you within 24 hours after the return. If it comes back, I remove your address from the distribution list and, if I don't hear from you within a month wondering why you're not getting anything, I remove your name from the directory. If you stop hearing from me it's not because I no longer like you. It's because I can no longer get to you. -- Identify yourself by name in your postings. I can usually figure out who you are from the address, but not always. I do not publish anonymous postings. -- Indicate what your posting is about on the subject line of your header. "For ACQNET" or "RE: ACQNET 2(78)" or blanks force me to dream up some- thing. I know you can't always do that when you use the "reply" function of your system, but every bit helps here. -- Please do no be so generous and return the text of the issue you are responding to with your answer. The one I sent you was yours to keep. It's not so bad when your answer comes at the beginning of the message but, when it's at the end, that's editor abuse. -- Please use anonymous FTP to get back issues. I no longer keep them on my disk and it's a real hassle to hunt for them in my archives. If you no longer have the instructions I sent you for how to do this, let me know. Thank you. While this firm did appear on a 1977 list of Gille publications issued by ALA, it was removed from later lists. Reference Publications, according to 1980 information, is run by Keith Irvine (a former Gille associate) who appears to operate a legitimate publishing business and whose blood pressure shoots up when his firm is linked to his former employer. (3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 19 Aug 1992 12:27 EDT From: Thomas Syseskey (Holy Cross College) Subject: Reference Publications Thank you, Peter, for updating my information on Reference Publications; my list of Gille brothers imprints is quite old. Also, I apologize to Keith Irvine (if he has or should read my first message) for any inconveniences which it may (have) cause(d). Nonetheless, I stand by the ALA's warning to investigate any publications which involve a large prepayment (in my opinion, $75 per volumes is large) and (by implication) with returns privilege. In the case of Reference Publications' _Dictionary of African Biography_, the reviewing sources which I consulted highly recommend the first two volumes. There may be a connection between Jazz Heritage and Musical Heritage Society, 1710 Highway 35, Ocean, NJ 07712-9923. I recently received an advertisement from Musical Heritage offering to send information on "Jazz Heritage, the no-purch- ase-obligation club for jazz lovers!" There is no phone number on the flyer I received. I have not had much luck in the past with an American book jobber. Does anyone use a book jobber in the Middle East that can supply books in Arabic that were published anywhere in the Middle East? If not, perhaps an Egyptian book jobber that is reliable. Thanks for your help. Names and addresses would be appreciated. The address and phone # we have for them is: ABA Publishing Co., P.O. Box 758, 200 Patterson, Westport, WA 98595 (206) 268-9205 Have any ACQNET folks had any **recent** success in contacting them?? Or perhaps any definitive indication(s) that they no longer exist???
