First, the Better Business Bureau in Alexandria, or perhaps a larger geographic area including Alexandria, might be able to help. Second, the Publisher/Vendor-Library Relations Committee of ALCTS may pursue such things. Richard Jasper is the chair (EMail: LIBRPJ@EMUVM1.BITNET); he is at Emory University Library. I passed the informa- tion on to our Documents Librarian. He was not familiar with this particular CD-ROM, but suggested calling the attorney general in Virginia. Columbia is trying to set up a file of "problem suppliers" and we want to begin with that list. Any advice would be helpful. Thanks. (6) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 7 May 1992 17:34 EDT From: David Marshall Subject: Foreign vendors directory The recent requests for vendor information appearing in ACQNET lead me to ask into the status of a new edition of the _Third World Bookdealers._ The last I have was compiled by Jennifer Magnus and revised by Sylvia Csiffary. It was published in 1979 for the old Resources Section of RTSD. Has the ALCTS Acquisition of Library Materials Section, Foreign Book Dealers Directories Series Subcommittee been active? Does anyone on ACQNET have any information regarding this committee's activities, or relevant activity elsewhere? Has a later edition appeared that I possibly missed? I am aware of other similar tools - a list compiled by the Consortium of Universities of the Washington Metropolitan Area published in 1986; SALALM's _Directory of vendors of Latin American library materials_, 3rd edition, 1988; and _Directory of foreign monograph vendors serving libraries in North Caroli- na,_ published in 1990. But, wouldn't it be a worthwhile project to produce a national comprehensive directory? Dear ... The Instituto Mexicano Norteamericano de Relationes Culturales is the American binational center in Chihuahua, Mexico. It performs an important role in the development of understanding and interchange between the U.S. and Mexico. The Institute is the principal center in Chihuahua for instruction in the English language and also has an ample program of courses in both American studies and Mexican culture. The Institute promotes graduate study in the United States and has been singularly successful in placing qualified Mexican students in the U.S. universities. The Institute's library, of about 12,000 volumes, is the only American style library open to the public in Chihuahua. Its books are an important support for students in each of the three universities of the city, as well as high school students, children, and the public in general. Because the Institute is a public service organization with a very limited budget, it is difficult to maintain adequate library resources. Therefore, any books discarded by your library would be valuable assets in Chihuahua and I am writing to ask your help in this regard. Due to the variety of university programs that use the Institute's resources, books in all fields are welcome and of great value to the program. Because of the cost of library materials and the time-lapse between publications in English and translation into Spanish, even outdated scientific and technological volumes are often important resources in Chihuahua. If you are able to make available any books for the Institute's use, you may send them directly to: MR FRANK MALGESINI, DIRECTOR, INST. MEX/NORTEAMERI- CANO DE REIS CULTURALES, c/o DR. JOHN AMASTAE, DiRECTOR, DEPT. OF LINGUISTICS UNIV. OF TEXAS AT EL PASO, EL PASO, TEXAS 79968 I can assure you that whatever you may be able to send will be put to good use and will be greatly appreciated. With all best wishes, Sincerely yours, Richard R. Peterson, U.S. Consul General, Ciudad Juarez, Mexico (8) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 15 May 92 11:14:39 EST From: Miko Pattie Subject: Thanks THANKS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY LIBRARY SCHOOL It has been quite an experience for my students this past spring semester to be able to listen in to all your dialogues on ACQNET. Even though most of them did not contribute much to the dialogues, Mitzi Williams and Laurie Mackellar did inquire about library schools' curriculum on acquisitions and serials and did receive your input. In fact, both of them vehemently defended the need for such courses in their class presentations. I want to thank you all for responding to them. Those students that did not skywrite did tell me how important it is for them to hear directly from practitioners on issues that are engaging and emerging. They are shy though. They are intimidated and awed by the medium and the audience. That is understandable. I want to tell you about a meeting I recently attended about how prepared library school students are when they go into the real world of technical services-- the panelists were adamant about the importance of having a strong alliance between the faculty and practitioners. They proposed team teaching, practicum, etc. to merge the knowledge base and practice. I think this medium functions to bridge these two very well. I, for one, am a true believer in this and I have you all to be grateful for. Thank you for your open arms. I will bring you my students again next spring. ******* END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 2, No. 56 ****** END OF FILE *******
