ACQNET v2n053 (April 20, 1992) URL = http://www.infomotions.com/serials/acqnet/acq-v2n053 ISSN: 1057-5308 *************** ACQNET, Vol. 2, No. 53, April 20, 1992 ====================================== (1) FROM: Christian SUBJECT: ACQNET delivery errors (25 lines) (2) FROM: Christian SUBJECT: ACQNET to suspend publication (7 lines) (3) FROM: Maggie Rioux SUBJECT: Unsolicited books, Bowker (26 lines) (4) FROM: Joe Barker SUBJECT: Touzot/Casalini reception at ALA (28 lines) (5) FROM: Barbara Winters SUBJECT: Job announcement (74 lines) (1) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 20 Apr 92 07:50:56 EDT From: Christian Subject: ACQNET delivery errors The number of delivery errors is increasing. There isn't a day anymore when I don't have at least two. There were six for the last issue (Vol. 2, No. 53). It is usually unclear why messages are returned by your systems. A frequent message is "No such user." Another is "Disk capacity exceeded." More often I can't tell, and I cannot in good conscience deluge my very nice postmaster with these which, so far, have always proved to be external to Cornell. I just want to remind you of what I do when an issue or a message is returned: I re-try sending it the next day. If that doesn't work, I remove the addressee involved from my distribution list, but not from the directory file. If I don't hear from that person within a month then I remove him or her from the directory file. I will keep doing this as long as I can, but I must tell you that, if the volume keeps increasing, I may have to do something more radical, such as removing the returned messages and the individuals involved right away. The bottom line is this: If you haven't received an ACQNET in two weeks, you are no longer on the distribution list. We average an issue every two days, but there are occasionally periods of up to a week, such as when I'm on vacation, when no issues are sent. So, after two weeks without anything, you probably ought to drop me a note. I will be in Charleston visiting with my folks and enjoying the surrounding beaches. (3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 18 Apr 92 09:58:11 -0400 From: Maggie Rioux Subject: More on my Bowker unsolicited item I thought ACQNET readers might like to know how my adventures with Bowker's unordered directory came out. The buyer from our Purchasing Dept. who works with publications called Bowker to report that we didn't want to buy the expensive directory they had sent us. She asked for a call tag, but also told him how much trouble this mailing had already cost - i.e., receiving department verifying that the item had not come on a purchase order, librarian's time to determine that we had not ordered it and did not want it, buyer's time to contact Bowker, more shipping & time to monitor call tag and pack and ship directory. Not to mention Bowker's time to deal with returning the copy to inventory! The gentlemen admitted that this had been a lousy idea and also decided that we could keep the directory at no charge, which we will do. Let this be a lesson to other publishers - you need to have a lot of people keep (and pay for) the unsolicited materials to make up for the time (read money) you spend on the ones that are returned or given away.
