Can anyone recommend an appraiser who could value such a collection? On the more general topic of appraising gift materials which are not so specialized, can anyone recommend an appraiser within a reasonable distance from Memphis or West Tennessee? Please send replies to me rather than to ACQNET. Thanks for your help. (3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 15 Apr 92 09:04:08 EDT From: Douglas Duchin Subject: Everett, vendors on ACQNET In reference to the Everett letter, I think this raises the question of whether or not commercial suppliers should have access to ACQNET. It certainly brought me up short to find that a commercial vendor would start quoting from our letters without permission, in "all innocence." I, for one, will not feel comfortable making any further comments to ACQNET. Douglas Duchin Manager, Acquisitions and Serials Baruch College Library (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- DATE: Wednesday, 15 April 92 10:04:41 CST FROM: Cara Beth Stevenson Subject: Thesis Declaration Form In response to an order we placed to UMI for a British dissertation copy, we were sent a copy of a Thesis Declaration Form (TDF) that must be filled out and "...signed by person wishing to consult thesis" before the copy can be supplied. The statement on the TDF reads as follows: I recognize that the copyright of the above-described thesis rests with the author or the university to which it was submitted, and that no quotation from it or information derived from it may be pub- lished without the prior written consent of the author or university (as may be appropriate). This title is being ordered for a public, open-stack library, which has no way of monitoring the actions of patrons who may use the book. Requiring patrons to sign release forms before using the title would violate our confidentiality- of-patron-records policy. I would like to know how other libraries handle similar requirements that a release form be signed before vendors will process & ship orders. Who does the signing? Acquisitions staff, the bibliographer/selector, or the patron who made the original request? (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 15 Apr 1992 13:14:49 CDT From: Karen Schmidt Subject: Pakistani vendors University of Illinois-Urbana is looking for a vendor of books and periodicals from Pakistan. The vendor we had been using over the years, Luzac, seems to be out of business - or, at least, we surmise this from the note on our returned envelope that said simply *Gone Away.* Most of our needs are satisifed by the current incarnation of the PL-480 plan, but we have the odd order here and there that we need to send to a vendor. Thanks. (6) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 15 Apr 1992 13:43 CST From: Jim Mumm <9724MUMMJ@VMS.CSD.MU.EDU> Subject: Law Library Microform Consortium Sometime around the middle of February LLMC sent our a notice that they were moving. I was told to send the invoice back. The book was sent in error and is ours to dispose of! (8) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 17 Apr 92 07:40:46 EST From: Amanda Harmon Subject: Document Delivery I would appreciate answers, comments, or speculation on some questions from those presently engaged in or planning for providing commercial document delivery services for faculty and students. 1) What service(s) do you currently use of plan to use? (CARL UNCOVER, OCLC/- Faxon Finder, Dialog Online, etc.) 2) Who can take advantage of the service? Faculty? Graduate students? Undergraduate students? Others? 3) Is your campus electronically networked? If so, can users directly access the services' databases? Can they place orders directly, or must they order through the library? How is the latter done (networked or not)? 4) Are library materials funds used a) to subscribe to the service (if applica- ble), and, b) to pay for documents and copyright charges? If not, what funds are used and how is payment handled? 5) How much control does the library exercise on orders placed and availability of funds? How much searching and record keeping is done prior to and after order placement? Are academic areas limited as to expenditures? Are funds allocated to them for this purpose? How is this monitored and reported? 6) What is the involvement of the acquisitions department in the commercial document delivery process? Of the interlibrary loan department? 7) Do you have any recommendations about good human or print resources on this subject? I would also be interested in hearing about non-commercial cooperative arrange- ments among institutions for document delivery. Answer however is most convenient.
