It is a catastrophy without equal for him and for us. For him, for all the obvious reasons: he and his family lost their possessions, all these things--replace- able and not-- which made their life theirs and different from ours. Lyman also lost his books, a treasure accumulated over a lifetime in the book business. I can only guess at the pain that this causes him. For us, too, it is a tragedy. He is a friend and teacher to so many of us! He might not recover from such a blow enough to want to continue to impart his knowledge to us. We must prevent that from happening because his perspective on publishing is unique and we need him to continue to talk to us. At this time I expect that Lyman needs two things urgently: money and knowing that he has a lot of support. With respect to money, Barry Fast, Vice Presi- dent of Academic Book Center where Lyman currently works, said that his company would coordinate the relief effort. He asked that checks made out to Lyman Newlin be mailed to Academic Book Center, 5600 N.E. Hassalo Street, Portland, OR 97213. Please send what you can, then write to Lyman and let him know that you are with him. If you can't send any money, write to him anyway. Your letters will help. (2) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 23 Jan 1992 09:01:16 -0500 From: Lawrence Caylor Subject: Purchase order retention This is in answer to Wanda Dole's question (ACQNET 2:8(9)) asking how long old purchase orders should be kept. In assessing the value of retaining old purchase orders, ask yourself a few questions: 1) Is the file of old P.O.'s being used? 2) How far back is it being used? 3) What is the benefit of keeping it? 4) Will it be detrimental to discard it? We have found that internal P.O.'s have little if any value after 2 years; besides, any vendor who fails to supply an item within that period probably won't. And if he should, he will have copies which he will send on request. My opinion: junk the files - you'll never miss them! (3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 23 Jan 92 08:51:36 PST From: Donna Signori Subject: Gifts of books overseas The announcement you may have recalled seeing about gift books to foreign countries is in the ALA _Memberline Newsletter_ on page 3, Fall 1991. The ALA has fact sheets available on a number of topics. One of them listed is on "sending books to needy countries". Call 800-545-2433 Ext.2153 to request copies. Hope this helps. (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 29 Jan 92 09:42:30 EST From: Mary McLaren Subject: Gifts of books overseas There is an active organization located in Lexington, KY, which sends books and journals overeas. It currently sends to universities in 100 countries. It is: The International Book Project Attn: Terry Bailey 1440 Delaware Avenue Lexington, KY 40505 (phone: (606) 254-6771) Medical materials must be 5 years in age or less, other subjects, 10 years or less. You may indicate a geographic preference if you'd like. Donors must pay shipping costs to Lexington. (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 29 Jan 92 13:11:42 EST From: Melissa Nasea Subject: Donating Journals to Foreign Countries Another place to investigate might be the Brother's Brother Foundation (824 Grandview, Pittsburgh, PA 15211; 412-431-1600). They send books and journals to general distribution points (rather than specific schools) in a number of countries. (6) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 23 Jan 1992 16:40 EST From: Nancy Stanley Subject: Edw. Hamilton Some weeks ago, there was a rquest for information about working with Edward Hamilton. One of our campus librarians has requested, over the past few years, quite a few titles from Hamilton. The advantage for him, of course, is the price. However for Acquisitions Receiving it has created quite a bit of extra work. It takes much longer to receive and trouble shoot Hamilton orders. The shipping slips do not include our order numbers and, the order slips are just tossed into the box rather than being inserted in each item. Since they have no phone or fax, it is difficult to communicate with him/them. The most difficult issue is that Hamilton requires prepayment for all orders but is frequently unable to fill the orders. This results in a lengthy and time consuming refund process. Between Oct. 10, 1990 and April 3, 1991, we ordered 1,426 items at a cost of $5,418.65 (admittedly bargain basement prices). Approximately 225 (16%) of those items were not available and refunds totaling $970.70 had to be processed. At times we have received duplicates or items which we did not order. For those, Hamilton has advised us simply to toss them. We have made several attempts to contact Hamilton and effect a change in the process but thus far there has been no response. As a result this year we have placed fewer orders.
