Based on what I read, see and hear, other libraries must be undergoing such cuts. Would it be worthwhile to review our individual responses to such cuts and how they will be effected in the acquisitions area in our libraries? (3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 10 Dec 1991 14:55 EDT From: Marsha Clark Subject: POPCORN! We're getting shipments from Harrassowitz packed in POPCORN--real popcorn, the kind people eat. We're trying to decide if it's good (biodegradable which styrofoam is not) or bad (we have mice in the department). Any preservation comments? (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 9 Dec 91 12:11:14 U From: "Joyce Ogburn" Subject: Popcorn for packing books We have been receiving packages from a vendor packed in popcorn. The packages arrive with pulverized popcorn and bits and pieces scattered throughout the box. Because of preservation implications, we have asked them to cease using popcorn and they are complying. Our main concern is that critters will be attracted to the food in the package and may damage the books. Another concern is that residual remains (tiny amounts of oil or bits of popcorn) will attract critters to the books in the stacks. I know that popcorn is more environmentally friendly than styrofoam and other options that exist. I also remember discussing this at an acquisitions meeting somewhere. Does anyone know whether other vendors are planning to switch to popcorn? Has this issue come up at other libraries? An electronic notice was sent to preservation officers. (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 05 Dec 91 16:48 EST From: "Gay N. Dannelly" Subject: ALCTS Task Force on Ethics ALCTS has appointed a Task Force on Ethics to respond to the recent concerns expressed by ALA Council. The Task Force will be developing a statement prior to Midwinter to represent ALCTS views at the hearing to be held Sunday, January 26, 1992. We would be most grateful for any comments you would like to make to us on the subject. The ALA Policy on Professional Ethics can be found in the ALA Policy Manual, section 54.16. We are particularly interested in areas that might not be adequately included in the 1981 policy as well as changes or improvements that might better represent ALCTS interests. Please reply to Gay N. Dannelly, Chair, at gnd@ohstmvsa.acs.ohio-state.edu. The other members of the Task Force are Gail Kennedy and Steve Marine. (6) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 09 Dec 91 17:58 EST From: "Janet L Flowers" Subject: Scholarly & Professional Publishers Approval Plan Our bibliographers are interested in beginning a new approval plan for scholar- ly and professional publishers. We already have a university press plan, a social sciences plan, plus some art plans, etc. In other words, we have limited approval plans based upon short lists of publishers. The proposed new plan is a small one consisting of publishers such as AMACON, American Sociolog- ical Association, Modern Language Association, and Phi Delta Kappa. We anticipate an annual cost of $7,000. I would appreciate it if other acquisitions librarians or vendors who have approval plans that are limited in scope would contact me with information about the vendor and the success of such plans. (7) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 10 Dec 91 17:18:42 EST From: Barbara Swetman Subject: Paperback vs hardcover Currently we purchase paperback editions only when the hardcover is unavail- able. We have almost all paperbacks commercially bound. Because of the HUGE price differences between some paperback and hardcover editions we are consid- ering changing our policy and purchasing more paperbacks. Does anyone have guidelines for hardcover vs. paperbacks purchasing that they would be willing to share?
