I don't know if any of these agencies work on the approval plan, but if you want I can send you the list of agencies (13 general, 12 religious) with addresses and phone numbers. We're a little slow here on electronic mail - although most have a fax number, I'm sure. The booklet is dated April 1991, and is available itself from Weill Publishers, P.O.Box 7705, Jerusalem 91076, Israel. It is published biennially on the occasion of the Jerusalem International Book Fair. Box 18189, Jerusalem 91181, Israel) as an Israeli approval source. Our budget for such purposes is small enough that we prefer to receive their seasonal lists of new Israeli publications, in Hebrew as well as English, with subject categories, and to make selections ourselves from those lists rather than receive books automati- cally on approval. This vendor works with a lot of large US research libraries and has over a decade of experience. (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 4 Nov 91 12:39 EST From: Eric Carpenter Subject: Rush orders At Oberlin we are trying to improve delivery of books needed on a RUSH basis, especially for Reserve. My questions are: 1. How fast is reasonable to expect delivery for in-print U.S. titles one really needs urgently? 2. At how much extra cost? 3. Who are the vendors who do the best job? Is it really reasonable to expect books in 1-2 weeks? I am interested in any comments on the effec- tiveness of the system (latest release) and network configurations. We antici- pate to run it on a Unix server and diskless workstations. Any or all comments will be greatly apppreciated. LMP lists Elgar as one of the publishers distributed by Gower Publishing Co. and the Elgar ad lists Gower's Old Post Road, Vermont address and phone number but no affliation. Does anyone have knowledge of the quality of Edward Elgar publications? We've sent the order to African Caribbean Imprint, Hogarth, and finally to Leishman & Taussig. Is there any other book dealer whom we might be able to use to acquire publi- cations from the Sudan? (8) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 13 Nov 91 09:54:51 CST From: Emily Shen Subject: State Mutual Book and Periodical Service Does anyone dealing with State Mutual Book and Periodical Service has problem with their price quoting? Since, according to BIP Plus, we could purchase the Euromonitor books (London) from them, we recently ordered two titles. On one title we sent a purchase order and received a quote for $350 and a request to prepay. So we asked for a proforma invoice. We received a second quote for $195. Since we did not get a real proforma the first time, we called them and got a third quote, this one for $150. For that title, the price listed in BIP is $600. For another order we sent to them we got a quote by mail for $455. Since that was not an acceptable proforma invoice, we called for one. This time a clerk told us the price was $795. I don't feel comfortable dealing with this company. Has anyone had similar experiences with them? (9) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 13 Nov 91 12:30:41 EST From: Mary McLaren Subject: Japan Publishing Trading Company We are having difficulty receiving replies to our correspondence to Japan Publishing Trading Company in Tokyo, Japan. It seems that we cannot get them to reply to either claims or repeated letters we have sent referring to receipt and invoice/statement problems. Does any one have any suggestions on how to get them to respond? (We have sent letters to named individuals, not just to departmental addresses.) Can anyone suggest responsible alternative vendors to supply Japanese materi- als? ******* END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 1, No. 126 ****** END OF FILE *******
