Here it is. From Kevin Edgecomb at Berkeley I have received the following message: Joe and family are just fine. The fire was at the very southeastern tip of Berkeley, working south; the Barker family lives north of Berkeley. Quite a few professors, staff and students did have their homes in those hills, but no longer. Word now is $1.5 BILLION(!) damage, at least 14 dead, 80 injured, 1200 homes gone, and 1800 acres incinerated. There are still a few hot spots, but it seems that the devouring threat has spent itself. That area was packed with some of the most beautiful and historic homes in the area. It's a shame. And from Ann Swartzell: Things are fine with the both my own situation and the Library, though campus WAS closed on Monday (a very cautious response by the Chancellor). I haven't seen/heard from Joe B yet, but I think his home is a bit to the north so he should have escaped danger. A student working for me was burned out of a rental home and another, gone for the weekend, is now trying to find out what happened to her shared house (some areas of fire damage are still on limited access). I think there will be more stories--original ## of homes burned has grown from 200-300 to over 1,000 (and how many personal libraries and special collections?) ******* END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 1, No. 120 ****** END OF FILE *******
