It seems that the issue is one for central policy administration and leadership from Christian. Personally, I also welcome publishers for discussion on ACQNET. But I have trouble finding the time to wade through ACQNET as it is. I have staff who handle publishers' announcements, which come in abundance in paper. We would NEVER read or forward to selectors e-mail publishers' announcements mixed into ACQNET. (3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 02 Oct 91 9:07:49 EDT From: "Susan More" Subject: Publishers on ACQNET 1) I want to hear the news that's relevant to our discussions, even if publish- ing it might benefit a commercial concern. After all, it's my decision whether to act on the news. 2) Publishers should be welcomed on ACQNET to join in discussions of issues. 3) I don't want ads or general announcements, either on ACQNET or directly from a publisher who gets my address from ACQNET or anywhere else. I hope the ACQNET Editorial Board will write a policy forbidding use of our membership list for any commercial purpose, and include it the the "Who's New" in every issue. (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 02 Oct 91 10:03:39 -0700 From: Julia Gelfand Subject: Publishers on ACQNET I am very sympathetic to both sides of the controversy concerning vendor access to this ACQNET. I think we should encourage open communication with the vendors and if this is one way they will share information with librarians, it is a small risk to purge the information you don't want. I think Karen Muller's comments are very relevant. (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 02 Oct 91 10:27:46 PDT From: Meta Nissley Subject: Publishers on ACQNET, e-junk mail I also agree with Chuck Hamaker. Who wants or has the time to navigate through garbage? I don't believe unsolicited advertising should be a freebie we all receive because we subscribe to electronic lists and newsletters. However, I also believe that publishers should not be excluded from a network simply because they are publishers, commercial or otherwise. I believe we had the same discussion about vendor participation and possible abuse. Both vendors and publishers offer relevant information and pertinent discussion on issues of interest to our general community. To exclude a group, such as publishers, is the antithesis of what we're all about, is it not? The issue of addressing abuses is difficult. For instance, how do I convince Gale to stop sending so much duplicate advertising in the regular mail and save a few trees? I'm afraid we are going to have to rely on integrity and the honor system and put up with the few who chose to misuse the system. (6) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 30 Sep 1991 10:06 EDT From: "CHAMBERLAIN, CAROL" Subject: Publishers on ACQNET On the issue of whether publishers should be allowed to join ACQNET it will be good to see the response from subscribers. I take issue with Chuck's conten- tion that allowing them on might lead to e-mail commercials. You would edit them out anyway. Right? Anyway, in my range of dislikes I much prefer to read commercials on e-mail than to get caught with some telemarketing person who calls me 5 days in a row with nothing useful to say. Also, what's the dif- ference between having publishers on ACQNET and having advertisers use the addresses from organizational mailing lists to fill our paper mailboxes? (7) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 02 Oct 91 9:07:49 EDT From: "Susan More" Subject: Positive vendor information Good, we all agree that we should have documents to back up negative statements about vendors and publishers. What about positive statements? No, I don't think full documentation is needed to back up a good recommendation. "We use them and like them" is based on real, day to day experience. But "they have a good reputation" (somebody said something like that about UNIPUB) doesn't sound like direct experience. Shouldn't we be as responsible to our colleagues in our praises as in our cautions? (8) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 2 Oct 91 10:16:28 LCL From: "Sheila Mangum" Subject: Purchasing music on CDs The University of North Florida Library has been purchasing CDs for about 5 years, with a heavy concentration in classical and jazz. Our main vendor has been The Audio Visual Buff Co., 9 Kenny Rd., P.O. Box 2628, Athens, OH 45701-2628, phone: 614-593-3014 - ask to speak to Bob Hartley. Discounts & service charges vary. Our Media Department compiles lists primarily from the Schwann Compact Disc Catalog (beware, their CD numbers are OFTEN incorrect) and from ads and promo- tional pieces brought over by faculty members. AVB folks are very nice to deal with BUT - their invoicing is a nightmare (handwritten, no computerization). Another company we've used for about two years, which is limited almost exclu- sively to classical music is: Haverstick & Ballyk, 2186 Jackson Keller, San Antonio, TX 78213, phone: 512-342-4012 - ask for Jan Haden, who takes care of university accounts. They put out a number of catalogs, including some for special sales. They have been very easy to deal with and their invoicing is computerized and easy to read. Pricing will vary, and should be discussed with the company. (9) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 2 Oct 91 12:18 EDT From: Betty Oktay Subject: music cd distributors I asked our music librarian who orders music CDs directly (rather than through Acq.) her recommendation for Margaret Sylvia (ACQNET 1:110(7).) Sarah Canino writes as follows: I have found the MLSC Music Library Service Company - Compact Disc Specialists to be extremely helpful. They supply libraries and individuals, which is unusual, and their prices are very competitive. Address: 5410-N Highway 55 Durham, NC 27713 Phone 919-544-6111 Fax 919-544-0745 They handle RUSH orders by phone. ******* END OF FILE ****** ACQNET, Vol. 1, No. 111 ****** END OF FILE *******
