I don't know if Chuck's fear of getting garbage over the e-waves is valid or not. I haven't received anything yet myself, but then again, I'm not Chuck Hamaker! Of course, if publishers send us messages directly, we do lose Christian's contribution as policing agent. Also, I didn't think publishers were able to get into Bitnet too easily. Don't you have to be associated with an academic institution or something like that? My final reaction would be to let the publishers in, if they are able to get onto Bitnet. How many could afford the expense of flooding our terminals with messages? (3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 30 Sep 91 13:18:56 EDT From: Richard Jasper Subject: Publishers on ACQNET, junk e-mail Well, fiddle dee dee, as Scarlett would say. I say, Let the publishers in and then dare them to start sending junk e-mail to folks. How does Chuck know that LSU isn't selling its e-mail directory to somebody in the first place? We already get junk e-mail from the Student Union, hawking discount tickets, sandwiches etc. The publishers will probably try it, too, but one of the nice things about e-mail is that you can send truly nasty replies without having to affix 29 cents postage and waiting 'til the next day... (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 1 Oct 1991 08:42:42 CDT From: Karen Schmidt Subject: Publishers on ACQNET, junk e-mail Christian, here's a vote in your favor for posting the information about Meckler. I think ACQNET should have a wide variety of informational items - if I don't feel like reading them, I don't. As to having publishers on ACQNET, I would like to see them enter the discus- sions. However, they should be limited to discussions, and NOT use this newsletter for publicity. They should also be barred from using the ACQNET mailing list for sending out publishing annoucements, as Chuck Hamaker suggests will happen. We have had successful experiences with interactions among librarians, vendors and publishers at ALA, and I don't see why this dialogue cannot continue electronically. (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 1 October 1991 08:32:29 CDT From: "Karen Muller/ALCTS 312-280-5031" Subject: Publishers on ACQNET, junk e-mail First, the issue Chuck raised of the potential for "junk" e-mail from commercial entities now using the networks: Yes, the potential exists--just as it does anytime we issue a directory in any form. I belong to the University of Chicago Women's Business Group, and our annual directory has a strongly worded statement about using its contents for any purpose other than "individu- al communication." But I receive calls from all kinds of consultants who freely admit they obtained my name from the directory. You will also recall your distress when ALCTS used the mailing list for the _Newsletter on Serial Pricing Issues_ (original series) for distribution of the first ALCTS NETWORK NEWS. [I said then that ALCTS had no right to use my e-mail address without my permission even to send me its stuff. C.] I suspect we have to believe that such uses falls within in rights of free speech and access to information. Second, there is the issue of whether persons working for commercial entities should participate with us on these networks. As someone who has worked in the private sector, I firmly believe that we who are in the public sector must WELCOME our colleagues' involvement in all aspects of our professional lives if we wish to continue to foster the good communications that are necessary to resolving the pricing and budgetary issues facing us all. Third, drawing the line between information and a sales pitch. Well, that's nearly impossible. The Wall Street Journal is probably 50% p.r. from companies announcing new products and services, new appointments, sales results, etc. Much of this information can be used as market signalling intended to enhance stock or other financial instrument value. The challenge for editors is to provide the information in an equitable and neutral fashion so that the information needs of the readers are served without compromising editorial principle. This is why editing is not mere compilation. I'm ready to buy more of these funny computers with rainbows on them so I want to know that new monitors have been introduced and at what price. Obtaining that information from the morning paper is easier than calling the sales rep and hearing the sales pitch--but in the news column I want facts; on the ad page I want features and benefits. In short, I'm all for involvement of ALL our col- leagues, leaving you with difficult editorial choices. The unmoderated lists are just that--and not our problem. (6) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 30 Sep 91 19:38 EDT From: "Carol P. Hawks" Subject: Graybooks My thanks to Deborah Fetch for her update on Graybooks moving to Boulder. I haven't dealt with then since 1987, but would assume that their viability as a vendor of architectural material is still good. Does anyone have more information as Deborah asked? (7) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- ======================================================================== 29 Date: Tue, 1 Oct 91 10:26 CST From: Margaret Sylvia Subject: Music CD vendors We are just now beginning to purchase a collection of music on compact disc to replace the thoroughly worn record collection we currently own. Since we discontinued purchasing records several years ago and I have never purchased them, I am completely at a loss as to how to begin this. I am sure there are experts out there to advise me. We have about $5000.00 to spend this year. We want to begin with a basic classical and jazz collection. Later on we may branch out into popular and other types of music. I have collected several discographies I want to start with, but I do not know the music vendors well. Who are other people buying from? What kind of discounts are you getting? What kind of collection development tools are you using? Are the vendors reliable and are they supplying most of your needs in a timely manner with few mistakes? If you have any tips for me or mistakes to avoid, I would appreciate knowing. As I said, this is a completely new venture for us and especially for me.
