This is about to change. I would like to know how others are handling Japanese orders. Do others send orders in Japanese? Is order information being romanized? Which vendors have no problems accepting romanized orders? Japan Publications Trading Company is our major vendor. I suspect they can handle order information romanized, but would like to hear from ACQNET readers what their experience has been and about other companies with whom they have had good transactions. (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 18 Sep 91 07:52:00 EDT From: "CAROLINE EARLY" Subject: PVLRC complaints From my past experience with PVLRC and my novice experience with electronic newsletters, I have a strong sense that ACQNET is not the proper medium for publicizing complaints about publishers. There are too many messages on the network "airwaves" that seem ill-advised. The fact finding involved in PVLRC investigations are often incremental and evolutionary, and an ill-advised or poorly timed rumor can hurt someone's livelihood. I have seen a few situations where litigation was threatened by parties who felt their earnings or partici- pation in the marketplace were damaged. With the electronic medium, it is too easy to put things in writing that can be traced to you, that you might think better of sending in a few days. PVLRC can play an important role in teaching librarians how to recognize suspicious situations. I don't have any problem with inquiries on ACQNET, provided they are neutrally worded. I'd hate to see a new librarian make an unwittingly libelous remark and pay a big price for it. (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 18 Sep 1991 10:52 EDT From: Pamela Rose Subject: PVLRC complaints With respect to how PVLRC should publicize complaints: ACQNET is the obvious choice, but there are those who are not linked with e-mail or discussion groups. Perhaps the major library organizations can be of assistance here. I would hope, by the way, that the process includes apprising the vendor/- publisher of the complaints/reports and gives them a chance to respond Of course, as in the Gille case, no response would be mandate enough to sound the alarm far and wide! As to how PVLRC can educate librarians and vendors: Conference programs would be valuable, especially if they are presented at all the major library organi- zation conferences, not just ALA (many medical librarians are involved in the Medical Library Association and are not able to participate in ALA as well). However, specific guidelines drawn up by these associations and disseminated appropriately would serve as a useful followup. In addition, such information should be widely distributed among publishers and vendors, hopefully warning them that we won't be as gullible the next time! We also have a professor in the Chinese Department here who helps smooth the way by communicating with them in Chinese, because we (being a state agency) have some peculiar requirements. However, they can handle English, bill in dollars (at least they convert the bottom line to dollars), and accept checks in dollars. ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE *****
