Information in our files appears to contradict the earlier message: "that we not confuse this company (Graybooks in Boulder, CO, who is filing for bankruptcy) with a very successful company in Houston , TX, which bears the same name. The Houston company deals exclusively with architectural material and has a thriving mail order business which is known to most architects and architectural librarians." Our receiving supervisor checked the invoice files. All the invoices she found were for architectural materials from Graybooks at the Boulder address. Our publishers file also shows an address change in 1989 from the Houston address to Boulder. She also contacted a staff member in the Architecture Library who seems to recall that Graybooks catalogs did come from Texas but are now from Boulder. The catalog format has not changed. We suspect that the Graybooks in Houston and Boulder are the same company, but we could be mistaken. Does anyone have more information? (3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 06 Sep 91 8:13:22 EDT From: "Susan More" Subject: Reporting negative publisher or vendor information [In a parallel discussion while the queries about UNIFO were being dealt with I explained to Susan ACQNET's policy with respect to publishing negative informa- tion. That policy, recently discussed by the Editorial Board, is that we will publish documented facts related to a vendor's or publisher's practices. When ACQNET first started we discussed whether vendors and publishers should be identified by name and we decided that they should be. C.] Our recent discussion about UNIFO Publishers leaves me with the following question: do we (can we) set a standard for our "recommendations" along the lines you have suggested? [See above. C.] One of the very useful elements of ACQNET is the quick return of answers from people who know (at least, we all are willing to assume they do). We would all prefer to hear what they know ("what" and "know" underlined) in addition to how they evaluate it (also useful). It seems to me if one is going to speak publicly, one should have the documentation ready to show to anyone who wants to see it - including the vendor who may believe he has been wronged. Has anyone used/heard of this vendor? I'll welcome your opinions. (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 9 Sep 1991 09:28:09 CDT From: Karen Schmidt Subject: Tenets of acquisition I'm glad you're bringing the topic of tenets up again for consideration. In this dialogue, I hope we remember Ranganathan - he pretty much said it all and said it best. If we build our structure on his foundation of simple truths, we will be describing acquisitions as it belongs to librarianship. Joyce has gone a long way toward this process. (6) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 10 Sep 91 16:59:27 EDT From: Richard Jasper Subject: Vendors of Chinese materials We very rarely buy materials published in China (or Taiwan, for that matter). When we do, we usually order through Cheng & Tsui in Boston or China Books & Periodicals in San Francisco but neither has been able to supply a title we need from China Environmental Science Press. Any ideas on where to go? (7) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 12 Sep 91 8:42:04 PDT From: Peter Stevens Subject: Acquisitions standards, staffing Another of the topics that come up regularly when acquisitions librarians talk is what constitutes an adequate staffing level. Because acquisitions opera- tions can cover so many different activities besides ordering--searching, accounting, serials, gifts, etc--it is very difficult to identify whether one's own operation is highly effective. It's also difficult to identify other acquisitions operations that are highly efficient from which one could learn ways to improve. Have any acquisitions librarians wrestled with this topic and developed any measures which they could share? (8) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 12 Sep 91 16:30:49 EDT From: Julie Gammon Subject: PVLR complaints As a member of the Complaint Resolution Subcommittee of the ALCTS PVLRC, I am seeking ideas. Our subcommittee's broad charge is to develop specific policies and procedures for maintaining and updating a list of publishers who are taking advantage of librarians and vendors. In other words, a methodology for updating the infamous "Gille" list with which many of you are familiar. Specifically, I need your input on two items: 1. How should PVLRC publicize these complaints and inquiries concerning problem publishers in order to reach the greatest number of librarians and vendors? Of course, ACQNET is the first one that comes to mind. What other ideas would you suggest? 2. What ideas do you have for ways that PVLRC can educate librarians and vendors in the appropriate steps to take to protect themselves against problem publishers? Seminars, pre-conference programs, written documentation? What do you suggest? Our subcommittee's recommendations will be presented to PVLRC for their consideration. Please send me any thoughts you have on this subject directly (Phone: 216-972-6254; Bitnet: R1JAG@AKRONVM) or through ACQNET ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE *****
