I am especially interested in the impact the Company had on how books are bought by and sold to libraries. I would like the views of both vendors and librarians and have a set of questions to ask. If you would like to share your views, (or know someone I should contact) please contact me at : ONEIA.ILS@MHS.UNC.EDU (Internet) or write to me in care of The School of Information and Library Science, 100 Manning Hall CB #3360, University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, NC 27599-3360. (3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 27 Aug 91 11:44 EDT From: Betty Oktay Subject: UNIFO We have purchased a title now and then over the years from UNIFO. It seems to be a one man operation. The owner moved from Westchester County, NY to Florida. I cannot vouch for comparative prices. However he has been reliable and has been in the business for years. (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 28 Aug 91 09:14 EDT From: Richard Jasper Subject: UNIFO Company FYI the attached from our documents librarian, Elizabeth McBride . I asked her to comment on the UNIFO query, since she and I had discussed earlier this summer... ---------------------------Original Message---------------------------- UNIFO is reputable. They have been essentially a distributor but they have published a number of UN reference books that we own. I'm not aware that they've ever undertaken something on this scale before (perhaps the opportunity hasn't been there.) I've written to them for more info. on this project. (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 27 Aug 91 13:50:16 PDT From: Peter Stevens Subject: Migration from one online acquisitions system to another I'm interested in learning about the experiences of libraries which have migrated from one online acquisitions system--such as Geac--to another online acquisitions system--such as Innovacq: how was conversion of outstanding orders accomplished and how was access to the years of ordering and accounting on the old system retained, etc. If other ACQNET members know of libraries not on ACQNET which have already managed this migration, I'd appreciate knowing about them so that I may write or call them. (6) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 27 Aug 91 13:54:19 PDT From: Peter Stevens Subject: Ethics of buying review copies I've been asked to investigate the ethics and legality of purchasing review copies from a campus publication. While we once received these copies as gifts, the publication would now like to sell these titles to us at 50% off the list price: an excellent discount for us and badly-needed revenue for them. I receive immediate notification of titles that they do not plan to review and wish to dispose of--so I can check our acquisitions database. Have any other acquisitions operations had any experience with this situation? (7) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 27 Aug 91 17:26 EDT From: "Carol P. Hawks" Subject: Graybooks I'm not familiar with the company, GrayBooks, in Boulder, CO., but I would caution that we not confuse this company with a very successful company in Houston, TX., which bears the same name. The Houston company deals exclusively with architectural material and has a thriving mail order business which is known to most architects and architectural librarians. (8) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 28 Aug 91 14:40:00 EST From: Ann Paloma Subject: Concerning Graybooks of Boulder, CO In reply to item #5 in ACQNET, Vol. 1, No. 98, August 26, 1991, we have indeed had some nefarious dealings with Graybooks (dealings with nefarious Graybooks?) here at Cleveland Public Library. Our Acquisitions Dept. says: We prepaid for several books, 4 of which have never arrived. We're lucky in that our loss totals only $148.00. In June of this year, we received notice from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court that Graybooks had filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy but that we should "not file a proof of claim until [we] receive notice to do so." On August 26, we received a "proof of claim" form from the Bankruptcy Court. The policy of the Library's business office, per the Cuyahoga County Prosecu- tor's Office, is to file a claim with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court only when the library's loss is substantial--and $148.00 is not considered substantial enough to invest the time and money required to file such a claim. Thus, our claim will not be filed. If anyone would like more particulars, feel free to send e-mail to ANN@ LIBRARY.CPL.ORG or call Ron Charvat in our Acquisitions Dept. (216-623-2814). Does anyone have experience - positive or negative - with this vendor? How many libraries are using primarily one vendor for a multi-country Latin American approval plan (excluding Brazil)? Who are you using and are you satisfied with their performance in the areas of selection, fulfillment, pricing, invoicing and customer service? ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE *****
