One thing I find is that I'm not quite the timely fiend Christian is, especially when I've had a week like the one just past--Oy vey! Scott Wicks, meanwhile, has been extremely diligent about forwarding contributions and, most importantly, names... Cornell has recently undertaken the task of vendor selection for its domestic firm order and approval plan business. The criteria which we used to determine the "cheapest" way to acquire these library materials included vendor discount, customer services, and the general ease of doing business with the vendor. Discounts do not go very far if your staff is spending much of its time trying to reach the customer service representative and/or returning a high volume of materials sent in error. Christian's concept of cheap goes beyond the bottom line of the vendor's invoice. (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Date: July 15, 1991 From: Scott Wicks Subject: What gives? I assume that many of you, too, received the letter from Collets sent under S.R.F. Lytton's signature asking for permission to supply back orders (1988 -) formerly ordered through Les Livres Etrangers. It was my understanding (unless I was dreaming) that Kamkin was elected by the central USSR distributing agent, MK, to supply all back ordered titles. Did I miss a chapter of this saga? (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Date: July 16, 1991 From: Gene Dewey Subject: Cancelling orders with Georg Olms Verlag As a part of a project to either cancel or claim the outstanding manual orders that remain since our conversion to NOTIS, we cancelled two orders for OLMS reprints which dated back to April 1984. These reprints apparently were announced at that time, but have never been published. We received a strange response to our cancellation notice: "We are prepared to accept your cancellation of the above mentioned title on condition that you give us a replacement order. Under seperate |sic| cover you will get some information material for your convenience in ordering." We intend to ignore their request for replacement orders, but I wonder if other libraries have received similar responses to cancellations and, if so, what you response has been. (6) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Date: July 17, 1991 From: "Joyce Ogburn" Subject: Acquisitions at Yale I have the great pleasure of announcing that an Acquisitions Department is being reconstituted for Yale University Sterling Memorial Library. The department will report to Technical Services and Jerry Lowell, AUL for Tech Services. As you may guess, I am now Head of Acquisitions. I am also Chief Acquisitions Librarian for the Yale libraries, but efforts in pulling together an acquisitions program for Yale will not happen until the acquisitions department is functioning smoothly. The full description of the department and its responsibilities is not final, so I cannot report those details as yet. More will be forthcoming on this matter in the coming weeks. Please join me in saying a haleluja, amen, and in general celebration! At last a happy story about acquisitions! (8) ----------------------------------------------------------------- Date: July 21, 1991 From: Richard Jasper Subject: Micropublisher Query Does anyone have any experience in purchasing material from Datamics, Inc., a micropublisher based in New York City? We're considering a large purchase and are hesitating because 50% prepayment is requested and we don't know the publisher. I'd appreciate any information you could pass along. *****END OF FILE*****END OF FILE*****END OF FILE*****END OF FILE***** |
