If the other tenets were true, the computers would be doing our work. The other tenets are, of course, the exceptions in today's world, and we are needed to straighten out the mess [boy, doesn't that sound noble!]. With the exception of the accountability point made in the list, the work of acquisitions can be done by any other departments: monographs, serials, accounting, administration. We have our jobs because the system doesn't work. Nowhere in technical services is expertise so necessary [and stress levels as high]. So, chin-up, little buckaroos ... ours is a holy mission: to battle the evils of publishing houses, to contend with the Master Abacus of Accounting, and to fight for truth, justice and the American way! Linke" Subject: British Dissertations I don't have the answer to Joyce Ogburn's question about British doctoral theses. Does anyone from CRL read ACQNET? Surely someone there might have some insight into the acquisition/copyright problems posed by British theses. It's been quite some time since I utilized CRL for British theses and perhaps their procedures have changed, but formerly they did acquire British disserta- tions on demand, provided the author's permission could be obtained. (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 03 May 91 13:41:28 EDT From: Christian Subject: Buckley-Little Book Catalogue Co. In 1983 there appeared in LAPT a two-page description of the Buckley-Little Book Co., a creation of William F. Buckley Jr. and Stuart W. Little. The two gentlemen envisioned a plan whereby authors of books about to be remaindered would negotiate with their publishers to buy the overstock, tell Buckley-Little which, for a slight fee to the author, would print catalogs of such titles and distribute them to libraries and the rest of the book-reading world. Authors would keep the books in their garages, attics, kitchen, wherever, and wait for orders. The general idea was to give authors some control over their books after their original publishers had given up on them. Assuming that problems such as lack of money for destitute authors or difficulties in obtaining conjugal consent for the storing of book boxes in kitchens, etc., could be overcome, Buckley- Little went ahead and got lists from authors. I got curious about this enterprise, so I went to consult the Manhattan phone directory (did I say that B-L was located in New York?) and found that the company wasn't listed. Does anyone know what happened to it? Was there ever a follow up story in LAPT or elsewhere? I could, of course, plow through indexes and such, but asking is so much easier. I would appreciate any information that anyone may have. If I don't get any I'll write to Buckley. (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 3 May 1991 16:08 EST From: Carol Lawrence Subject: Acquisitions/Collection development Christian, I agree with Joe Barker that you always pose *the* most thoughtful questions -- only Joe himself could do as well! I agree with your supposition that tensions between acq. & coll dev. increase with size of library. We had mid-sized concerns of this kind in the Undergraduate Library at UC Berkeley; Joe can attest to the larger-sized problem in the Main Library--unless he has resolved all of that since I left. MANY years ago there were similar difficul- ties at the DC Public Library. But there is a limit on how much the tension can shrink. When *one person* does head of tech services and collection development, tension still remains pretty high! [This message was followed by another which said: "If you think the comments I sent useful, you may use in any form you like ... only stipulation is that you have to include the first sentence or so!" Disobeying Carol is something one does only at great risk. I'm not that brave, so I left it in. C.] ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE *****
