Schaffner" Subject: Soviet Firm Orders In response to Gene Dewey's request: I have received notifications from Kubon and Sagner of Munich, and Znanie Book Store of San Francisco. Both firms state stating that they will be able to provide Soviet publications. Znanie states: "We are pleased to announce that we have installed an enhanced computer system that has substantially increased our ability to handle special orders from the NOVYE KNIGI SSSR catalog." Kubon and Sagner wrote that they will provide a variety of services including the operation of Soviet blanket order plans, the ability to provide multi-volume sets, and they will accept orders from the curret issues of NOVYE KNIGI. Keep in mind that no dealer or vendor will be able to provide many materials if the current problems plaguing the Soviet publishing industry continue. (3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 9 Apr 91 09:31:00 From: Joyce Ogburn Subject: Acquisitions education Once again the subjects of acquisitions education and professional recruitment have reared their heads together. I firmly believe that we have to continue to push for education, internships, whatever we can to make acquisitions and its professionalism more visible. In order to accomplish this we have to lay some groundwork. First, I am committed to writing an article/book or something about the acquisitions professional, not the business of acquisitions. Ideas from my colleagues would be most welcome. I have drafted several outlines, but have not taken a formal stab at writing yet. Bits and pieces are clear to me at this point. Let me know what you think our theory is, our reason for existence, our purpose in life, etc. We need to get this into print in a high profile publication, like _College and Research Libraries_. If you will all give me a jump start, I am willing to commit to doing this soon. If any of you has done research in the literature of professions, please send citations, papers, articles, whatever. If we can document the disturbing trend in the dissolution of acquisitions departments or loss of professional positions, that would be useful as well. Let's quit talking about it among ourselves and get it out to the larger professional arena. (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: 9 Apr 91 09:36:23 From: Joyce Ogburn Subject: ACQNET user directory I find the user directory invaluable for tracking down colleagues, especially since I moved and I am the only acquisitions person at Yale. I had a problem with the version I received in e-mail: my network garbled it for my IBM, but a friendly Mac user could get it out and print it for me. Has anyone else experienced that problem? Christian, any reason you can think of that caused this? Someone here thought that the problem might be that you sent it from a Mac. [Nope. I don't use things that have half eaten apples in rainbow colors drawn on them. Too cute, too slow. Besides, I am not that fond of apples. Sue is in acquisitions, but is also Preservation Librarian. (6) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 09 Apr 91 20:48:10 EDT From: Michael Strangelove <441495@UOTTAWA.CA> Subject: Directory of electronic journals and newsletters I am presently compiling a comprehensive directory of electronic journals and newsletters of academic interest. This directory will be made available in e-text for public dissemination throughout the networks and will be available shortly in print form from the ARL. Thus I am seeking the following informa- tion from journal and newsletter editors: title, description, how to subscribe, how to submit material, info on related list, if any, how to access back issues, who to contact for more information. Please send this information to: Michael Strangelove <441495@ACADVM1.UOTTAWA.CA> Network Research Facilitator Department of Religious Studies University of Ottawa NB - Please note that the above information must be received before April 26, 1991 if your journal/newsletter is to be included in the print version of the directory. [I have already responded for ACQNET. This is for those of you who are involved with other electronic projects. C.] (7) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 10 Apr 91 11:56 EST From: Marsh Clark Subject: Missing books Patrons are encouraged to report missing books to the circulation desk and fill out a search form. Circulation staff search missing items about once a week for 3 weeks and for those not found, the forms are sent to Collection Manage- ment. CM holds the forms for 3 months and/or until after the end-of-term locker clean-out. There then follows a lengthy, elaborate procedure to deter- mine if and with what we should replace the missing book. So we show it in circulation as missing after a few weeks, we start the replacement process after 3 months and we probably finish the decision-making process in 6-12 months (by which time perhaps we've bought a new edition?) (8) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 10 Apr 91 11:33 EST From: Marsha Clark Subject: Combined acquisitions/cataloging units At Midwinter 1990, I attended the Automated Acquisitions/In-Process Control Discussion Group meeting where the combining of acquisitions and cataloging was discussed. From my notes, Gene Rollins of the University of Houston discussed the combining of the copy cataloging unit which had previously been responsible for pre-order searching as well as copy cataloging with the acquisitions unit. Everyone was cross-trained which allowed improvements in work flow and materials were received and cataloged in one step. In the discussion that followed, an interesting point was raised by a state institution librarian who pointed out that auditing and accounting practices at state institutions do not allow the same people who order to also receive materials. I know that I've attended other discussions of point-of-receipt cataloging which is the first step in merging the units. ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE *****
