I don't know about others' e-mail boxes, but both of mine, in some form or fashion, force me to read through the entire message on my screen once I begin looking at it. In order to save or delete, I have to move (admittedly this can be done quickly) screen by screen, and reading directories takes time without being very productive. Would it be an option for you to post it on a related file and tell us where we can retrieve if we need such a list? Presumably it changes so quickly that what is posted today is not accurate within a short time, anyhow. Just a vote. Thanks. [Reply: No, it wouldn't be possible now for non-Cornell users to retrieve files from a Cornell computer on demand. Right now I send the directories as mail files, but I don't have to. I could send them as regular text files which would allow readers to bypass their mail systems altogether. I can send them less frequently, I can only send them to people who want them (i.e. ask for them). I am reluctant to send them in printed form or on floppies. It takes too much staff time to mail the things. As I announced at the beginning of ACQNET we may become guinea pigs for a new list/network manager (I don't know what to call it). That may include a solution to Ann's problem. I'm trying to wake the guy up who's supposed to work on it, but so far without success. Who else is having a problem? -- Christian] (3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 19 Mar 91 08:58 EST From: Beth Jacoby Subject: Kenny's approval plan The University of Delaware recently set up an approval plan with Kenny's Bookshop in Ireland for history, politics, sociology, international affairs, and literature by established Irish writers. Unfortunately, the plan was arranged by our Collection Development Dept. without any input from, or forewarning to, the Acquisitions Dept., so when the first 2 shipments came in, we had many duplicates of titles we had received on our B.H. Blackwell approval plan and titles we had firm ordered. THe prices of the Kenny books are comparable to the BHB books. I haven't been able to discover why Collection Development wanted the plan in the first place. I have yet to see a real advantage to the plan. Especially since we, in Acquisitions, have spent much time and psychic energy writing procedures, trying to eliminate duplications with other sources, crying to the selectors to come review the books so we can process the invoice and books, and all the other time-consuming details which go into setting up a new approval plan, albeit a small one. I'd like to hear from libraries with approval plans with Kenny's which see any advantages to them. What are the advantages, and do they outweigh the staff time required to set up and maintain the plan? This company is, or at least has been, consulting for the FAXON Company. I was interviewed last fall by William H. Rogers, the president of the company. The questions were general in nature and they seemed to be aimed at compiling an impression of what libraries need from vendors as a group and from FAXON in particular. Mr. Rogers did say that he was talking to a "number of librarians" but I haven't talked to anyone elso who was interviewed. I had the impression that FAXON was using the consultants to help them get a clearer picture of what types of new products they could offer to libraries. (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 20 Mar 91 11:59 CST From: Gene Dewey Subject: Russian materials (next go-around) Now that the dust seems to have settled with regard to Russian periodicals (by the way, we went with Kamkin, following LC, Harvard, Columbia and others), we are wondering what has happened to the firm orders and standing orders for non-periodical serials and monographic sets which we had with Les Livres Etrangers. Has anyone out there had any word from Delorme about this side of his records? What are other ACQNET libraries doing for these orders? Has anyone developed a program to print out a list of all Livres Etrangers orders from a NOTIS database? NOTIS provides for a list of orders, but it is by fund code and includes all vendors, so the list would be mammoth and unwieldy to use. We know that we will have hundreds of standing orders to re-order. What an unwelcome job! (6) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: March 20, 1991 From: Christian Boissonnas Subject: Slavic orders and subscriptions I have it from a very reliable source -- I will not identify this person because I forgot to ask for permission to quote. Unlike media hounds, I assume that nothing I am told is on the record unless authorized by the source. -- that MK will only accept U.S. subscriptions from Kamkin and that the deadline for renewal was March 10th, not March 1st. Note that my source was told that by MK on March 12th. We are still waiting for replies to our phone calls, telex messages, and fax transmissions to MK.
