(2) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 02 Mar 91 20:49:21 EST From: Christian Subject: New ACQNET back files There are two new back files available. One (filename LLE_SLAV.POS) covers the situation with Les Livres Etrangers and Slavic orders and subscriptions. It is up-to-date through the current issue of ACQNET. The other (filename WALKMEN.POS) groups the postings on the issue of staff use of radio/cassette players. To request send me an e-mail message indicating the name of the file you want and whether I am to send it as an e-mail or standard ASCII file. (3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 28 Feb 91 16:30 EDT From: "DOLE, WANDA" Subject: Ordering from vendor slips Regarding ordering from announcement slips, I am of the school that believes one should place the order with the vendor who supplied you with the informa- tion. The information is not "free" nor are the slips (i.e., generating, producing and sending the slips cost the vendor money). Why are you receiving the SAME information from several sources??? It seems to me that you could tighten your profiles and NOT receive lots of slips on the same titles. (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 28 Feb 91 18:04:41 PST From: "VICKY REICH" Subject: Slavic orders & subscriptions Update on Slavic orders and subs from Stanford: Mezhkniga will not honor former Les Livres Etrangers orders placed through Collets; there is no choice but to use Kamkin, and we have placed orders. What follows are portions of a message from Wojciech Zalewski, Slavic Curator, Stanford: "Kamkin (Kira Caiafa) told me that all books ordered by us through Les Livres will come to Kamkin. Kamkin, as it seems, will not know who ordered what because they will not have our order slips. Kamkin just received 30 tons of books from Mezhkniga. What is in those containers they do not know. They will have to hire many people to struggle with this new situation." "Collets thinks we should protest with Mezhkniga their arbitrary assignment of dealers." "I talked to Ivanov, director of Bibl. Inostrannoi Literatury. He did not offer much insight due to chaotic situation in the USSR. He said, what is obvious, that publishers have no structures to enable them to handle sales directly. Voprosy istorii is dead, Novyi Mir almost dead or dead. Exchange libraries have the means to buy books for us and they need us." (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 02 Mar 91 11:58 EST From: "Marcia Tuttle" Subject: Slavic orders and subscriptions The full story of our subscriptions is this. We asked a vendor other than Kamkin to handle our Livres Etrangers renewals. They agreed willingly to add them to the others they were handling for us (the new ones; their renewals had been paid to LLE in the fall). The vendor rep told me about sending a FAX to MK asking for an extension of the deadline and the same guaranteed prices and fulfillment as Kamkin. Early Thursday morning the rep called to say that MK would not give them any guarantees. We discussed it for a while and the rep recommended that we go on and renew through Kamkin (but protest the arbitrary March 1 deadline), because those were, including the 20 percent discount, pretty good prices. If the titles aren't published, of course we won't get them, but Kamkin seemed to be our best bet this year. We may transfer to another vendor next year. I called Kamkin and had a very nice conversation with someone. I told her I couldn't identify one of the titles, and she looked it up on the computer and gave me both the previous and the current title of what was listed on our renewal list. Very helpful and thanked me for calling and for using Kamkin. I told her I was FAXing the list and gave her our account number, my name, and my phone number. Then I did it.
