I have no idea what has long-term value, and what doesn't, so I'm not erasing anything. On the other hand, I don't want to spend my life looking for one or another of the pearls of wisdom which I have read and promptly forgot when, or in which issue. So, I have done two things this weekend: The first was to generate a list of topics covered on ACQNET so far, in which issues. Sort of an index. The second thing I have done was to generate a set of files, each one on a separate topic, grouping in each file all the postings received on that topic. Now I feel in control again. It is quasi-archiving, and I don't think, at least for the foreseeable future, that it will kill me to maintain these lists and files. If it does, we'll have to regroup. I will send the two lists to you, each to a separate ACQNET issue. I think you'll find it easier to manage them separately rather than if they are incorporated in this issue. Therefore, tonight, there will be 3 ACQNET issues. Our Administration has had a request to allow "walkman" usage throughout the Library. After discussion, we thought this might be a good issue to pose to other institutions. Do any libraries have any policies on the use of "walkmans" (personal head- phones) in the library? Do you permit usage, and if so, do you have a task oriented policy, departmental level policy, or library-wide policy concerning their usage. Some librarians (myself not included) feel that walkmans are okay in Technical Services, but not Public Services. Any reaction to this? This is surprising news to us and a concern as we have subscriptions to almost 90 Soviet titles with them. We have had little to no experience in dealing with Collets, our other primary agent for this type of material has been Kubon and Sagner. I was wondering if you could poll the ACQNET membership about what options other are seeking. [Consider yourselves polled, ACQNET members. C.] At the moment we are leaning towards going with K&S simply because they can handle CDN$ payments, however I believe we have had some problems with delayed shipments and I don't know how well they will handle an increase of orders if we all transfer to them. (4) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 22 Feb 91 18:13:38 PST From: Kat McGrath Subject: Canadian Goods and Services Tax I haven't seen any mention of GST (the new Canadian Goods and Services tax implemented (?) on January 1, 1991) in ACQNET so far. I can tell you it has caused major headaches for us here at UBC as well as for our vendors - in fact some vendors have indicated that they will no longer do business with Canadian customers. I would be interested to hear about the experience of any other subscribers with this. How do you prepay without an invoice? More specifically, has anyone ordered successfully from Edward R.
