Thanks. (2) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 22 Jan 91 15:38:38 est From: Eileen Hardy Subject: Query: LOTUS-like budgeting software needed I am looking for some good, easy-to-use, LOTUS-like budget modelling software. Does anyone know of any software that lends itself to library materials budget modelling? I want to be able to assess the effects of the usual variables (exchange rates, cost projections from vendors, etc.) on the current budget, while formulating that for the next FY (or more). [I use an IBM-PC with hard disk]...any ideas out there? Eileen Hardy, Wellesley College Library (3) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 24 Jan 1991 15:20 EST From: Richard Jasper Subject: News Release from PVLR Committee about Editions Briel Postal Inspector Looking Into Complaints Regarding Editions Briel The U.S. Postal Service is looking into complaints about Editions Briel, a Cambridge, Mass.-based publisher, regarding non-fulfillment of prepaid orders, according to Postal Inspector Stephen Rothemich of Boston. As a result of these complaints, Rothemich reported in early January, the Postal Service has issued a stop order against Editions Briel's postal address, which is 1430 Massachussets Avenue, Suite #306-126, Cambridge, Mass. 02138-3810. Rothemich indicated that all mail sent to the Editions Briel address, which is a mail drop in Cambridge's Harvard Square, would be held until such time as the stop order is lifted or the box is closed. The complaints Rothemich has received are similar in nature to two complaints against Editions Briel received by the ALCTS Publisher/Vendor-Library Relations Committee. In both cases, librarians ordered and prepaid multiple titles from an Editions Briel brochure which circulated in early 1990 to many libraries across the United States and Canada. The brochure offered English translations of primarily late nineteenth century Eastern European titles on early Christian and Eastern Orthodox religion. The two libraries, which together prepaid more than $2000 for the titles, have yet to receive the titles ordered, with no explanation from Editions Briel. The Postal Service, according to Rothemich had scheduled an administrative/- civil hearing of the matter in Washington, D.C., then postponed the hearing at the request of Editions Briel's attorney. He expected the hearing to be rescheduled. If, as a result of the hearing, a decision is made to close the Editions Briel address, the mail currently being held will be returned to sender, Rothemich said. Rothemich asked that anyone having an interest in this matter, particularly those who prepaid orders to Editions Briel, to contact him at the following address/telephone number: Stephen Rothemich, Postal Inspector P.O. Box 2217 Boston, MA 02205-2217 Phone: (617) 439-3605 Likewise, librarians experiencing similar problems with non-fulfillment of prepaid orders may report their complaints to PVLR by completing and returning the PVLR complaint form, available from the ALCTS Office, 50 East Huron Street, Chicago, IL 60611. PVLR will forward such complaints to the U.S. Postal Service as appropriate. As has been often repeated, PVLR suggests that librarians exercise the utmost caution in prepaying orders so that they may avoid possible non-fulfillment problems. -- Richard Jasper, Chair ALCTS Publisher/Vendor Library Relations Committee (4) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FROM: Editor SUBJECT: ACQNET directory DATE: January 26, 1991 The directory is finished. It comes in 3 parts. The first is a listing arranged alphabetically by members' last names. The second is a listing arranged by e-mail address. The third is a listing arranged by state, then institution, then members' last names. I will send them, each in a separate mail file following this issue. You should, therefore, have 4 items waiting for you on Monday. Please let me know of any changes that you would like to see in future edi- tions. I will plan to issue new editions after each ALA or whenever the volume of changes seems to justify it. Also let me know of any format changes that you would like to see. I am not wedded to this one. (5) ---------------------------------------------------------------------- FROM: Editor SUBJECT: Headers DATE: January 26, 1991 Some of you have asked me when I was going to remove those three screens of addresses that you have to scroll through before getting to the contents of ACQNET. Right now I can't. I've looked into it, tried some things, talked to the e- mail mavens here, and there's no way. We are using an older version of Ricemail (from Rice University, not something from some Battle Creek, MI company.) Relief, however, is on the horizon. On February 10th we are going to install a new version of Ricemail which should, according to the above mavens, allow me to suppress the headers on outgoing messages. The question remains: Are there any of you who would be desolated to lose these 3 screens? If so, you'd better mount a good campaign for retaining them 'cause they're going if you don't. ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE ***** END OF FILE *****
