Who is writing letters and what are they saying is really something for off-network discussion between those interested. Specifics should be addressed here, but not "group" or anything like that responses. - How's that for my two cents worth? chuck (2) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Barbara Winters Subject: Administrivia I think ACQNET is a WONDERFUL idea -- a chance to communicate with acquisitions types and not just restricted to those who happen to share your automated system. However, one thing worries me: We're automatically excluding public librari- ans. Has this been discussed? (3) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Barbara Winters Subject: ALA Acquisitions Administrators Discussion Group Midwinter Program It always makes me happy to see Joe Barker throw my name around! Yes, Joe, I think Christian should discuss the ACQNET at the Acquisitions Administrators' Discussion Group. I will speak with him about this. I'm especially pleased to see ACQNET right now because the Commonwealth of Virginia isn't fiscally solvent enough to allow me to send out fliers about the midwinter meetings of the two Discussion Groups I'm most closely associated with. Therefore, here comes your flier. (I'll -- I, that is -- think that this forum will be very useful for this type of info in the future. We could send print copies only to people on our rosters but not on Bitnet....) ACQUISITION ADMINISTRATORS' DISCUSSION GROUP: "Education of Acquisitions Librarians" is the topic. Deanna Marcum, who had agreed to speak from the educator's point-of-view, called just this week to say her husband is scheduled for major surgery on January 14; she's finding a replacement for herself. As soon as she has details, I'll notify you. Of course, I'm disappointed because Dean Marcum is not only an educator (Dean, School of L&IS, Catholic University) but also a former acq librarian. I have suggested that she give her paper to a tech services person to read. She's willing to do this. Joyce Ogburn will speak from the practitioner's perspective. As most of you know, Joyce has worked extensively to develop competencies for acquisitions librarians as a member of the ALCTS Education Committee. Karen Schmidt (who has recently published a history on the topic in LRTS) will serve as commentator and moderator. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, January 15, 11:30-1:00 at the Hilton, Lake Michigan Room. I'm pleased to announce that this IS the final location. Bless Amy Katzenberger -- she got us into the same location as the Acquisitions Librarians/Vendors of Library Materials Discussion Group, or at least the same hotel. ***Contact me if you have questions: phone no. 804-367-1094 BITNET address: BWINTERS@VCUVAX.bitnet Barbara Winters (4) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Barbara Winters Subject: Automated Acquisitions/In Process Control Systems in Libraries Discussion Group Midwinter Program AUTOMATED ACQUISITIONS/IN PROCESS CONTROL SYSTEMS IN LIBRARIES DG "Authority Control in the Order Process: What Do Catalogers Want, and Do We Care?" is the topic for this discussion. Discussion initiators are Barbara Anderson, Head of Cataloging at VCU, who will talk about what catalogers would like for us to do in an ideal setting. Judy Webster, Head of Acquisitions at the University of Tennessee, will speak as an acquisitions manager who does not currently perform authority control but thinks she should. She'll talk about how she's analyzed what would be involved in implementing this process, and so forth. Lee Bennett, ACQ Librarian at Loyola of Chicago, will represent a NOTIS site where authority control of ACQ records is performed -- but not by ACQ. Terry Fahy, Head of ACQ at Arizona, will discuss how he would organize and prepare for authority control work at an Innovative Interfaces site. The meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 14, 9:00-11:00. Location is the Hilton Lake Erie Room. ***Contact me if you have questions: phone no. 804-367-1094 BITNET address: BWINTERS@VCUVAX.bitnet Barbara Winters (5) ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 19 Dec 90 15:22:23 PST From: Meta Nissley Subject: o p search Has anyone had experience using an online database service such as BookQuest for out-of-print searches?
