Assistant Director for Collections and Technical Services
J.Y. Joyner Library, East Carolina University
J.Y. Joyner Library, East Carolina University is expanding its services
to meet the needs of a rapidly growing campus. It seeks an enthusiastic
colleague to provide vision and leadership that reflects current needs
and anticipates future trends in the evolving library and information
environment, including the rapid changes in providing access to digital
and physical materials to a wide range of constituents. The successful
candidate will work with unit coordinators to plan and direct the work
of a group of approximately seven professionals and twenty-one
paraprofessionals.
Responsibilities: The Assistant Director for Collections and Technical
Services reports to the Director of Academic Library Services and serves
on the senior management team. The Assistant Director will contribute to
strategic planning, program development and evaluation, and allocation
of resources in support of the Library's mission. The Assistant Director
will manage and supervise work processes for the selection, acquisition,
licensing, description, classification, linking and maintenance of
library collections of all types and in all formats; and provide
hands-on leadership in the establishment of workflows, priorities, and
support systems that enhance access to the collection. S/he will
communicate clearly, set high expectations, define and ensure quality
outputs, and actively mentor unit coordinators and staff.
Finalists will be asked to make a brief presentation during the
on-campus interview.
Required Qualifications:
* ALA-accredited master's degree or international equivalent in library
or information science;
* Successful record of at least 5 years of substantial administrative or
management experience in collections and/or technical services in an
academic or research library;
* Demonstrated ability to supervise and direct a team of professional
and support staff;
* Demonstrated experience with budgeting;
* Record of effective leadership, accomplishment and innovation in
library collections and/or technical services;
* Knowledge of current trends in scholarly communication
* Superior oral and written communication skills
* Demonstrated ability to participate in a team environment, to create
innovative technical services workflows that contribute to quality
customer service;
* Leadership ability in long- range planning and transformational change
* Demonstrated flexibility and initiative;
* Demonstrated ability to achieve tenure through effective job
performance, contributions to the profession through research and
scholarly publication, and involvement in regional or national library
organizations.
Preferred Qualifications:
* Significant professional experience in a medium or large academic or
research library;
* Evidence of innovation using emerging information technologies,
including the ability to develop concepts from idea to implementation;
* Additional graduate degree
* Familiarity with link-resolvers, Open URL applications, ERMs, and
alternative access models;
* Knowledge of selection, collection management, acquisitions,
cataloging, preservation/conservation, licensing, and processing of
print and electronic resources;
* Experience with approval plan and serial vendors.

Rank, Salary and Benefits:
This is a twelve-month, tenure track faculty position with a
comprehensive fringe benefits package. Professional achievement,
service, and research/creative activity are required for tenure and
promotion. Rank and salary will be commensurate with candidate's
experience and professional achievement. Minimum salary of $72,000.
