Open Forum at Midwinter:
Who’s Keeping Core? : A Look at Core Book Lists
Monday, January 14, 2008
8 – 10 AM
Pennsylvania Convention Center, Room 204C
Most librarians would agree that there should be a definable “core” of
essential
books. But how many would agree on what the core is? This forum will explore
the tension between the idea of a core and the actual practice of
defining one.
PVLR invited a number of libraries and library-related organizations to
prepare
core lists for our forum under identical specifications. PVLR member Carolyn
Morris, of Coutts Information Services, will report our findings on the
degree
of overlap and the various methods used to define a core list by our
respondents,
who include Blackwells, the Committee on Institutional Cooperation
(CIC), Coutts
Information Services, MyiLibrary, OCLC, Queens Borough Public Library,
Stanford University, and YBP Library Services.
Our speakers will also include several of our respondents: Kim Armstrong and
Mark Sandler, Center for Library Initiatives, CIC; Ann-Marie Breaux,
Vice President,
Academic Services Development, YBP; Marcus Elmore, Choice Project Editor,
Resources for College Libraries; Glenda Lammers, Global Product Manager,
Business Intelligence, OCLC; and Will Wheeler, Curator for Anthropology,
Psychology, and Sociology, Stanford University;
Please join us in Philadelphia as we examine what has been one of the “core”
beliefs of librarianship.
