Subject:  Position Opening: Texas A&M University Libraries

Texas A&M University Libraries seeks energetic, knowledgeable
applicants for a general cataloger position.  Both entry level and
experienced candidates are encouraged to apply for this tenure track
faculty position. The position responsibilities will include cataloging
either monographs or continuing resources or both and may also include
assisting with metadata related to digital resources.

RESPONSIBILITIES:  The successful candidate will catalog monographs
and/or continuing resources, both print and electronic, in a variety of
subject areas and may assist with metadata related to digital resources.
 The cataloger will participate with other cataloging faculty in
formulating standards, policies and procedures.   The cataloger will
contribute original and complex copy cataloging following national
standards; participate in the NACO, SACO, BIBCO and CONSER components of
the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) according to established
guidelines; and participate in library committees, task forces, and
special projects related to bibliographic control. Librarians are
expected to participate in professional activities appropriate to their
position and to perform other duties as assigned.

This is an academic appointment carrying full faculty status and
responsibilities including research, publication and service to meet
both the Libraries’ and the University’s requirements for tenure and
promotion

QUALIFICATIONS: Required:  Master's Degree from an ALA-accredited
library program or international equivalent; cataloging, indexing or
metadata coursework beyond the basic or introductory level and/or
successful cataloging working experience; demonstrated knowledge of and
ability to apply standards such as Anglo-American Cataloging Rules,
LCRI, LCC, LCSH, and MARC21 coding; accuracy and attention to detail;
current awareness of national trends and developments in cataloging,
metadata standards and information retrieval; demonstrated knowledge of
both traditional cataloging practice and of emerging methods; ability to
communicate effectively orally and in writing; flexibility and the
ability to work independently as well as collegially in a team setting;
ability to work effectively with a culturally diverse population. 

Preferred:  Cataloging experience in an academic library; demonstrated
proficiency with microcomputer applications, including experience with
electronic information resources and database management systems (e.g.
Microsoft Access); working knowledge of cataloging procedures and
principles, including NACO, SACO, BIBCO, and CONSER standards; knowledge
of or experience with non-MARC metadata schemes and their application
for digital collections; reading knowledge of at least one language in
addition to English and facility in working with a variety of languages;
experience with OCLC or other major bibliographic utility; experience
with Voyager or other integrated library system.

ENVIRONMENT: The Cataloging Department, with 9.75 faculty catalogers
and 19 staff positions, catalogs approximately 60,000 titles and 95,000
volumes per year, with an increasing number of electronic resources
being processed.  The Texas A&M University Libraries participates in all
of the components of the Program for Cooperative Cataloging (PCC) as
well as the OCLC Enhance program. 

Founded in 1876, Texas A&M University has an enrollment of over 44,000
students, making it the seventh largest university in the nation. Texas
A&M University Libraries is a member of Association of Research
Libraries (ARL) and is the University's principal research and
information center, providing 3.9 million volumes, 5.6 million
microforms, 49,800 print and electronic serial titles, more than 300,000
electronic books, and over 600 databases. The University Libraries ranks
18th among ARL libraries in materials expenditures, with an acquisition
budget of $14.5m. There is a total staff of 268, including 91 librarians
with faculty status. Librarians work in a sophisticated online
environment utilizing Voyager, SFX, Metalib, Verde and a full range of
automated information retrieval services.

Salary/Benefits/Rank: Faculty rank and salary are commensurate with
qualifications and experience; salary is not less than $44,000.
