Subject: Survey Concerning Candidates' Interview Expectations

Please Excuse the Cross Posting:

I am doing a survey. I am examining how attitudes of candidates for
professional library positions (i.e., positions requiring a masters
degree from an American Library Association accredited library and
information science program) are changing. This survey will consist
of two parts. One will be directed at persons who applied for a
professional position within the last two years. The second part is
aimed at persons involved in the hiring for such positions. Such
persons include those in management positions that are responsible for
hiring decisions, and those who serve on search committees who make
hiring recommendations (from this point forward such persons will be
referred to as "employers"). Thank you for your time and
assistance. Below is a link for the survey.

This study is being conducted by Paul Burnam, Public Services
Librarian at Ohio Wesleyan University. My goal is to determine if
there are changes developing in the expectations of candidates as to
what
advance information is reasonable for the hiring institution to provide
prior to the job interview. Once the data are collected and
analyzed, I plan to write up my conclusions and submit to an appropriate
professional journal for publication.

I would appreciate your completing the attached survey. Since the
validity of the results depend on obtaining a high response rate, your
participation is crucial to the success of this study. The survey which
will focus on the expectations of candidates as to what information is
reasonable to request from a prospective employer and will take
approximately 10 minutes or less to complete.

Your participation in the survey indicates your consent. Please be
assured that your responses will be held in the strictest
confidence. No data that might identify you or your institution
will be included. All surveys will be stored until the article is
completed then individual responses will be deleted. If the results
of this survey are accepted for publication, no identifying information
will be used.

The potential benefit to you from participating in the survey is a
better
understanding of what advance information is reasonable to supply to
candidates for a position. The survey may enable both candidates and
employers to enter into the interview process with a clearer
understanding of preliminary actions to prepare for the interview and
the
final outcome.

Contact information. If you have any questions about this study,
you can contact the
person below.

I hope that you will be able to participate in this study. Thank
you for your time and cooperation.
