POSITION: Assistant Head, Monographic Acquisitions and Rapid
Cataloging Department
DIVISION: Technical Services
REPORTS TO: Head, Monographic Acquisitions and Rapid Cataloging
Department
SUMMARY: Assists in all aspects of management of the Monographic
Acquisitions and Rapid Cataloging (MARC) Department, a large technical
services unit responsible for the order, receipt, and copy cataloging
of monographic publications. Specific responsibilities of the assistant
head include direct supervision of 9 non-exempt staff. The assistant
head monitors and manages day-to-day workflows and assignments in the
department; answers questions and solves problems related to both
acquisitions and cataloging; creates and maintains policy and procedural
documentation. The assistant head works closely with the head and one
non-exempt staff supervisor within the department and also with managers
in other technical services departments to coordinate policies,
procedures, and work flows.
RESPONSIBILITIES: Assists the head in all aspects of department
management, including goal and priority-setting, coordination with other
library units, policy and procedure formulation; monitoring and revision
of work flows, planning and monitoring production and use of resources,
designing and updating training programs and documentation for staff,
and communicating with library materials vendors. Substitutes for the
department head in meetings and other situations as assigned or as
necessary.
Supervises staff (currently 9 full time non-exempt staff positions at
the LA 2 level) engaged in a wide range of monographic acquisitions and
copy cataloging work. Prepares position descriptions; hires, trains and
evaluates staff; establishes performance standards and goals; monitors
the quantity and quality of staff production, encourages appropriate
continuing staff development, and recommends appropriate personnel
actions.
Works closely with the head and others to provide training,
documentation, and problem-solving support for staff, and to ensure
consistent communication with materials selectors, vendors, and other
library units. Works regularly with managers in other technical
services departments to coordinate policies and procedures and to
manage intra-divisional work flows and backlogs.
Serves as a departmental resource for acquisitions, cataloging, and
classification questions and problems. Works daily with materials in a
number of different formats and in a broad range of West European
languages. Helps manage automated processes such as the loading of
vendor and PromptCat bibliographic records, the use of vendor selection
and ordering web sites, and the processing of electronic invoices.
QUALIFICATIONS: Required: MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or
the equivalent combination of education and relevant library experience;
sufficient cataloging experience to support training, policy and
procedural formulation, and problem-solving for copy cataloging work;
demonstrated supervisory potential; excellent time management and
collaboration skills; ability to communicate effectively orally and in
writing; creativity, flexibility, and the ability to work with a variety
of staff; interest in and understanding of production processes;
interest
in and willingness to learn acquisitions duties and issues; familiarity
with at least one West European language.
Preferred: successful supervisory experience; acquisitions work
experience; experience using the Dewey Decimal Classification system for
call number assignment; experience using OCLC and an integrated library
management system; demonstrated ability to write clear, detailed
procedural documentation.
SALARY: Dependent on qualifications and experience.
