ALCTS Acquisitions Section Pre-Conference:/ Workflow Analysis,
Redesign, and Implementation: Integrating the Complexities of
Electronic Resources in the Digital Age/

Friday, June 22, 2007 1:30-5:00 PM

Collections and Technical Services leaders increasingly face
the need to rethink and re-tool their operations for the
digital age. Functional workflows now cross traditional
organizational lines and involve more systems, more people,
and more complexity than ever before. As libraries struggle
to balance staff efforts between print and electronic content,
and to shift priorities toward user preferences, long-standing
workflows naturally come under scrutiny. How can Collections
and Technical Services find the capacity and skills to meet
these challenges? This Pre-Conference outlines some proven
techniques for workflow analysis and redesign, as well as
some perspectives on staffing and organizational structure,
presented by experienced colleagues.

Participants will learn not only the fundamental principles
of workflow analysis, but also about best practices, tools,
and how to overcome potential obstacles. Hearing from those
who have undertaken such projects may also encourage attendees
to initiate a similar process in their own organization.

Speakers:

1) Rick Lugg and Ruth Fischer (R2 Consulting) – Overview
and Principles of Workflow Analysis
2) Catherine Tierney (AUL for Technical Services,
Stanford University) – Staffing and Personnel Issues in Workflow
Analysis

3) Kim Armstrong (Director of Collections Services, University
of Illinois at Springfield) – Workflow Analysis at a Small Academic
Institution

4) Celeste Feather (Serials/Electronic Resources Librarian,
The Ohio State University) – Workflow Analysis of E-serials and E-books

Please plan to attend in Washington, DC!
