UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY*

Libraries and Cultural Resources at the University of Calgary invites 
applications for the position
of Head of Technical Services and Digital Access. This is a full-time, 
tenure-track academic position
with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2007.

This position provides an exciting opportunity for a creative and 
innovative individual to collaborate
in the envisioning, planning, and development of a collections and 
technical services area that is
positioned to respond effectively to an increasingly digital environment 
in which immediate access
and long-term preservation are essential goals.

Responsibilities*

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Collections and 
Technical Services, and working
within a collaborative environment, the Head of Technical Services and 
Digital Access administers and
manages all aspects of technical services including acquisitions, 
cataloguing, preservation, and final
processing for the collections for the University of Calgary libraries, 
as well as for a number of
regional institutions through partnership agreements.

As Head of Technical Services and Digital Access, the incumbent is 
responsible for:
• Providing leadership in long-range planning and transformational 
change for the area
• Coordinating technical services workflow to ensure efficiency and 
effectiveness
• Overseeing the analysis, adjustment, and documentation of workflow, 
policies, priorities, and work assignments
• Being accountable for service innovation and the creative use of 
technology in support of technical services operations
• Broadening the scope of current Technical Services activities to 
include expanded services for archival holdings and digital collections
• Participating in the evaluation, development, and implementation of 
initiatives that support and enhance access to the collections
• Working both independently and collaboratively to achieve goals 
related to the provision of digital resources
• Serving as an advocate and as a resource person for innovative tools 
and technologies that support bibliographic control and acquisitions, 
both within Libraries and Cultural Resources and in consultation with 
colleagues from other institutions

As this is an academic staff position, participation and involvement in 
scholarship, teaching, and service is expected.

*Required Qualifications*

• Master’s degree from an American Library Association accredited 
program in librarianship or recognized equivalent
• Minimum of three years experience working in an academic library 
environment
• Significant experience in one or more areas of technical services, 
with a broad knowledge of related areas including e-resources and 
integrated online library systems (SIRSI preferred)
• Proven success in human resources management, including the ability to 
engage staff in a process of continual change and service improvement
• Ability to plan and solve problems creatively within a collaborative 
environment
• Knowledge of emerging online systems for the comprehensive digital 
research library
• Demonstrated experience in project management
• Excellent collegial, communication, and interpersonal skills.

Desired Qualifications*

• Understanding of the information needs of a scholarly research community
• Knowledge of emerging technologies applicable to bibliographic control 
and changes to cataloguing and metadata practices
• Knowledge of technologies related to long term preservation of digital 
resources
• Knowledge of technologies and vendor services related to acquisitions
• Knowledge of existing and emerging software/vendor solutions related 
to resource discovery and access
• Interest in scholarship, professional development, and service.

Librarian or Librarian level.
