The Ottenheimer Library of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock
(UALR) invites applications for the position of Director for Technical
Services and Technology, job #268. This is a full-time, 12 month
faculty appointment at the rank of Associate Professor, leading to
tenure. The Director is responsible for the overall operation of
Ottenheimer Library's Technical Services Departments including
acquisitions, cataloging, collection development, serials, and
multimedia information technology. The Director for Technical
Services and Technology is also responsible for planning, coordinating,
and implementing changes in technology throughout the library. The
successful candidate will be a member of the Library's senior
administrative group, sharing responsibility for the overall direction
of the University Library with other key managers including Directors
for Public Services, Archives and Special Collections, and
Administrative Services. This position will report directly to the
Dean of the Library.
Ottenheimer Library's materials budget is in excess of $1 million
annually. Its materials holdings include: nearly a half million
monographs, 11,000 electronic books, access to over 28,000 electronic
journals, 3,600 active periodical subscriptions, in excess of one
million microforms, and more than 115 electronic databases. The
Library's integrated library system is Innovative Interfaces.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Provide vision, direction and operational management for all technical
service functions (acquisitions, cataloging, collection development,
and serials.)
Supervise and evaluate Heads of Collection Development, Cataloging,
and Multimedia Information Technology.
Coordinate technical services and technology system activities and
workflow with other areas of the library and university.
Coordinate and plan for technological changes in the Library; oversee
library staff responsible for maintenance and support of the Library's
on-line systems and computing equipment.
Participate in library-wide programs such as collection development,
assessment, and strategic planning.
Take a leadership role, locally and nationally, in identifying and
implementing new developments in the field through active participation
in professional organizations.
REQUIREMENTS: ALA-accredited MLS; at least five years of professional
experience in a research or academic library in technical services
areas such as acquisitions, cataloging, collection development, serials,
and multimedia information technology; demonstrated understanding of
academic teaching and research needs; ability to view issues from a
broad library-wide perspective; excellent interpersonal, communication,
and planning skills.
PREFERRED: Experience with assessment of library services, strategic
planning, and project management; three years successful management
and supervision of librarians and paraprofessionals; experience with
integrated library systems; proven skills in the application of
technology to enhance effectiveness in technical services operations;
second advanced degree; qualifications for appointment at rank of
Associate Professor.
