THE UNIVERSITY AND THE LIBRARY
The University Library, which is a highly valued partner in teaching
and research at the University, has more than 12.5 million volumes
housed in the Sterling Memorial Library and 22 school and department
libraries. It employs a dynamic and innovative staff of nearly 600
FTE who have the opportunity to work with the highest caliber of
faculty and students, participate on committees and are involved in
other areas of staff development. A full spectrum of library resources,
from rare books and manuscripts to a rapidly expanding network of
electronic resources, constitutes one of Yale's distinctive strengths.

THE LAW LIBRARY AND UNIVERSITY
The Lillian Goldman Law Library with a collection of over one million
volumes and volume equivalents houses one of the world's finest
collections of printed legal materials. It is located in spectacularly
renovated facilities within the heart of the Yale Law School complex,
and serves the legal research needs of the Law School and University
communities. The Law Library serves the faculty and students of a
research-oriented law school with a strong tradition of
interdisciplinary scholarship, as well as other researchers from the
larger scholarly and legal communities. The Law Library fully supports
the needs of twenty-first century legal researchers by integrating
access to print and online sources. The Law Library is a leader in
its use of technology and uses Innovative Interfaces Millennium
integrated library system.
Lillian Goldman Law Library's Technical Services Division provides
support for a multi format collection growing at a rate of
approximately 16,000 new volumes per year with a staff of 4 full
time professional librarians and 12 full time library assistants.
The materials budget administered by Technical Services is over $2.6
million annually, for books, serials, on line services, binding and
preservation. The library uses Library of Congress classification
and has been fully reclassified.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Reporting to the Associate Director for Technical Services, the
Librarian for Serials Services at the Lillian Goldman Law Library is
responsible for the control and management of continuing resources in
both print and electronic formats. The incumbent will work with the
Librarian for Acquisitions Services and the Catalog Librarian for
Operations to maintain maximum effectiveness in a highly automated
environment.
Essential duties of the position include: supervising a staff of two
serials check-in assistants and two binding assistants; setting
policy and procedure for the maintenance and management of continuing
resources; ordering new serials subscriptions and monitoring
availability of electronic equivalents; establishing records for
control of print subscriptions and electronic aggregations and
databases; working closely with catalogers in solving problems in the
maintenance of bibliographic and check-in records. The incumbent
is expected to participate in library planning, committees and task
forces and to participate in campus, regional, and national
professional development and collaborative activities.
QUALIFICATIONS
An MLS from an ALA accredited library school and a minimum of two
years professional experience as a law serials librarian with
supervisory responsibility. Library training and experience should
demonstrate facility using microcomputers and solid knowledge of an
integrated library system with a preference for Innovative Interfaces.
Requires familiarity with bibliographic utilities and the basic tools
of technical services librarianship: Catalogers Desktop and
Classification Plus.
The ideal candidate should be self-motivated, possess superior
communication and interpersonal skills, demonstrate a strong service
orientation and an ability to work with varied user groups, be able
to function effectively in a team environment, be able to use and
train staff in computer applications for materials processing and
bibliographic control, and have an awareness of current trends in law
library technical services.
