Head of Bibliographic Services
 
Illinois State University's Milner Library seeks an innovative, forward-
thinking librarian for a tenure-track faculty position responsible for 
managing the Bibliographic Services Division.  This Division contains 
three units (Acquisitions, Cataloging, and Serials) that together total 
four faculty and 20 classified staff.  The Bibliographic Services 
Division is responsible for the acquisition and organization of all 
library resources, including pre-order searching, order placement, and 
material receipts; the creation and control of the Library's 
bibliographic records; and maintenance of the catalog and the Library's 
SFX knowledgebase.  The Division also contributes to the creation of 
metadata related to digitization projects utilizing CONTENTdm as the 
Library's digital management system.  The Library participates with 64 
other consortial libraries in a shared Endeavor Voyager integrated 
library system.

This position works in partnership with and reports to the Associate 
Dean for Technical Services.  The position interacts with the Library's 
administrative office, all library units and divisions, university lab 
schools, and state organizations, particularly the Consortium for 
Academic and Research Libraries in Illinois (CARLI).  Milner Library 
faculty members have responsibilities in the areas of librarianship, 
scholarship, and service as outlined in Illinois State University

University and Library:  As Illinois' oldest public university, Illinois 
State University (www.IllinoisState.edu) offers an outstanding education 
to 17,827 undergraduates in 37 disciplines, and 2,438 graduate students 
in diverse master's and doctoral programs. Milner Library supports those 
programs with a service-focused staff of 80, an institutional budget of 
$8 million, and a collection of over 1.6 million volumes.  The integrated 
library system (Endeavor Voyager 6.1), OpenURL link resolver (ExLibris 
SFX), and federated search product (WebFeat) in use at the Library are 
hosted by CARLI.  The Library is woven into the fabric of the campus at 
every level, appearing repeatedly in the campus strategic plan, the 
campus facilities plan, and the campus capital campaign plan - all 
evidence of institutional commitment to excellence in its library.  
Illinois State is located in Normal/Bloomington, a growing community 2-3 
hours from Chicago, Indianapolis, and St. Louis.  


Duties and Responsibilities:

 Develops procedures and workflow routines which can be used to 
accomplish objectives and improve efficiency of the Division.
 Directly supervises four faculty as well as two civil service staff.  
 Coordinates the activities of the other 18 civil service personnel in 
the Division.
  Selects, evaluates, and works with library material suppliers.
  Performs original cataloging or revision of support staff work.
  Works closely with the Collection Management Coordinator, Systems 
Coordinator, and the Library's Business Manager.
  Stays abreast of new technology, national developments, and best 
practices related to acquisitions and knowledge organization.
  Assists with planning for digitization projects and coordinating the 
creation and maintenance of metadata.


Required Qualifications:

  Master's degree in library/information science from an ALA-accredited 
institution.
  A second advanced degree in library science or a subject discipline is 
required for tenure.
  Experience in acquisitions and/or cataloging with increasing levels of 
responsibility.
  Significant supervisory experience with demonstrated ability to 
motivate, lead, and mentor staff along with a demonstrated commitment to 
staff development.
  Demonstrated knowledge of both traditional and electronic acquisitions.
  Knowledge of general cataloging forms, processes and techniques, and 
familiarity with basic cataloging tools, including AACR2, Library of 
Congress Subject Heading practice, Library of Congress and Dewey Decimal 
Classification systems, and MARC21 formats.
  Technical knowledge of and experience working with OCLC, integrated 
library systems, and other computer applications used in libraries.
  Familiarity with trends in library technology related to acquisitions 
and knowledge organization.
  Demonstrated ability and experience to plan, manage, and oversee complex 
projects, meet deadlines, and prioritize work in alignment with goals of 
the division, library, and university.
  Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills.
  Aptitude for accuracy and detail.
  Evidence of strong commitment to customer service
  Ability to meet university requirements for tenure, including scholarship 
and service.


Preferred Qualifications:

Evidence of any of the following will enhance a candidacy: 
  Familiarity with Endeavor's Voyager integrated library system;
  Experience working with vendors and preparing RFPs;
  Experience with non-MARC metadata schema, standards, best practices, and 
their application;
  Experience with a digital content management system (e.g. CONTENTdm).

Salary and Benefits: Salary commensurate with qualifications and experience. 
24 days vacation and 11 paid holidays per year.
