Head of Collection Development
Pepperdine University Libraries

POSITION VACANCY: The Pepperdine University Libraries are seeking 
qualified applicants for the position of Head of Collection Development.

This position reports to the AUL for Collections and Technical Services 
and is responsible for managing and coordinating print and electronic 
collection development for the Payson Library in Malibu, and for the 
Pepperdine graduate and campus libraries throughout the Los Angeles 
area and internationally. 

JOB DESCRIPTION: The successful candidate will direct and coordinate 
the selection of materials for the Pepperdine Libraries.  Our goal is 
to acquire a balanced array of electronic and print core collection 
materials in all disciplines over the next several years while also 
building research collections of distinction in key areas. This will 
be accomplished by working closely with faculty and with subject 
specialists to acquire library materials that are required for teaching,

research, and learning at each of the Pepperdine campus locations.  It 
will involve working closely with the Library's technical services 
group to assure that orders are properly processed and paid for.  It 
will also involve looking for new and innovative ways to identify 
information that may be of interest to the Library's users and 
developing creative ways of bringing this information to the attention 
of users. It is anticipated that the person selected for this position 
will also work closely with the digital library group to assure that 
the best electronic resources are acquired for the Library. Finally, 
it is expected that the incumbent will manage both approval plans and 
standing orders.

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES:  Responsible for coordinating the selection of 
materials in all formats for addition to the Library collections. 
Coordinates activities of library bibliographers to provide outreach 
and liaison with academic divisions. Develops written collection 
development policies and guidelines for subject areas based on known 
and anticipated academic program needs.  Conducts ongoing collection 
assessments using various tools, such as the OCLC collection assessment 
program, and makes public presentations regarding findings and plans to 
faculty, students, administration, and staff.  Participates in strategic

planning activities. Works closely with academic departments in program
planning, evaluation, and accreditation reports. Establishes and 
encourages open communication among bibliographers and liaisons. Manages

the library materials budget. Coordinates contract negotiations for 
library resources. As bibliographer, responsible for the selection, 
maintenance, and evaluation of library materials and the management of 
funds in support of specific academic programs.

Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS:  MLS/MLIS from an ALA accredited program. Three 
to five years of successful and increasingly responsible professional 
experience in collection management and development in an academic 
library setting. Demonstrated successful management and supervisory 
experience. Ability to communicate concepts and general and
task-specific 
information in oral, written, and electronic forms. Understanding of 
basic fund accounting principles and contract negotiation. Sound 
understanding of the evolving digital landscape, especially resources
that 
are being acquired by libraries to support learning, teaching and 
scholarship. Excellent analytical, problem-solving, interpersonal, 
organizational, and communications skills; good oral and writing skills;

flexibility, creativity, energy, and a strong public service
orientation. 
Experience with an integrated library system, and working knowledge of 
word processing and spreadsheet applications. Demonstrated ability to
work 
collaboratively and collegially with other library units and with
faculty. 
Bibliographic knowledge in an appropriate academic discipline. PREFERRED
- 
Advanced degree in bibliographic area of specialization. Excellent 
grounding in technical and public service issues that affect collection 
development. Knowledge of at least one foreign language. Significant 
knowledge of or demonstrated experience with digital libraries and/or 
institutional repositories. Professionally active in the areas of 
responsibility of this position. 

SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience; 12 month 
appointment plus benefits package.
