The University of Oregon Libraries

service-oriented colleague for the position of Acquisitions Librarian.
Applicants should be eager to apply excellent technical and
interpersonal skills to manage the Acquisitions Unit within the
Collection Development and Acquisitions Department

provide leadership for 4.0 FTE in the acquisitions unit. She/he will
coordinate the daily operations related to ordering, receiving, and
processing a wide variety of material from around the world. The
Libraries' Collection Development and Acquisitions Department (CDA)
consists of 5.0 FTE faculty members, and 8.0 FTE support staff members.
CDA works closely with the Libraries' subject specialists

acquire materials in all formats needed to support the educational and
research mission of the University. <http://www.uoregon.edu/> A part of
the Collections and Access Division, CDA is responsible for expending
the Library's $5 million materials budget.
Responsibilities:
Leads a busy, highly motivated unit responsible for the acquisitions of
library materials, regardless of format, including firm orders,
approvals, books in hand, and subscriptions. Serves as the functional
expert within the Library related to all aspects of the acquisitions
process. Collaborates daily with other CDA units, with additional
library staff, and with vendors and publishers to provide optimal access
to library materials for the University of Oregon scholarly community.
Will participate in providing materials budget estimates, establishing
fund allocations, monitoring expenditures, and fiscal closing, using the
Innopac/Millennium system and the University's accounting system.
Coordinates workflow redesign as necessary to enhance efficient and
effective acquisitions operations. Supervises 4.0 FTE library
technicians and assists in planning, recommending, and implementing
changes to improve unit operations. Acts as the technical expert in the
use of Innovative's Millennium Acquisitions module, actively
collaborating with Library Systems personnel to evaluate and implement
software applications in support of acquisitions operations. Maintains
acquisitions data, statistics, reports, policies, and procedures.
Regularly conveys developments within the field of acquisitions
librarianship to co-workers. Depending on subject expertise and/or
interest, may serve as a subject specialist to one or more academic
departments for the purposes of collection development and library
instruction. The successful candidate will support and enhance a diverse
learning and working environment.
Qualifications
Required:
* ALA-accredited MLIS degree in hand by start date (January 2007).
* Experience with acquisitions operations in an academic environment
or a similar large or complex library setting.
* Experience with integrated library systems, especially related to
acquisition functions.
* Familiarity with fund accounting and library budgeting practices.
* Experience working with vendors and content providers, including
book vendors, publishers, and library consortia.
* Demonstrated knowledge of library acquisitions business practices
* Excellent problem solving skills; ability to work well under
pressure and meet deadlines; and demonstrated experience handling
multiple priorities and/or projects.
* Strong commitment to service enhancement through teamwork and
through responsiveness to clients.
* Excellent oral and written communication skills.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently and to collaborate
effectively with staff at all levels and with people of diverse
backgrounds.
* Potential to excel in a dynamic academic library environment,
displaying leadership, flexibility, initiative, creative energy,
and resourcefulness.
Preferred:
* Experience supervising full-time employees and/or student
assistants.
* Experience with Innovative systems, especially Millennium modules.
* Familiarity with cataloging principles and procedures.
* Knowledge of collection development principles.
* Knowledge of trends or familiarity with trends related to digital
acquisitions.
Salary:
$35,000 minimum. Salary beyond the minimum will be based on prior
professional experience, education, and/or rank. The UO offers a

Employment Conditions:
Librarians hold academic faculty status with rank, and are non-tenured.
Contracts are fixed-term and renewable (two or three years, depending on
rank). Professional growth and service in keeping with university and
library standards for promotion and retention is expected.
