Head, Acquisitions Management Unit

The Head of the Acquisitions Management Unit (AMU) is a faculty 
librarian in the ULS Technical Services. This position reports to the 
Head of Technical Services. 

General Responsibilities:

The incumbent is responsible for managing the work of the AMU in 
Technical Services. In addition to the head of the unit, the AMU
consists of one faculty librarian who is responsible for English 
language cataloging, and seven support staff. The head of the unit is 
responsible for overseeing the ordering and receipt of monographic 
print and non-print materials in all languages except Chinese, 
Japanese, Korean and Slavic languages. The incumbent has overall 
responsibility for the cataloging of English language materials and 
is responsible for acquiring and receiving the library's standing 
orders and the United States and United Nations depository documents. 
The incumbent is responsible for several domestic and foreign approval 
plans and monitors approval plan acquisitions, establishing productive 
working relationships with vendors and implementing and coordinating 
efficient and cost effective vendor services where appropriate. The 
head of the unit provides overall leadership, sets direction for the 
faculty and staff of the AMU and provides expertise in the area of 
cost effective materials acquisition. The incumbent works in a 
collegial manner with other supervisors and staff in Technical 
Services, the ULS, and with colleagues in the University to facilitate 
the achievement of department and ULS goals, primarily by developing 
and implementing materials acquisition policies and procedures.

Specific duties:

*	Recruit, train, supervise and provide guidance and development 
opportunities for AMU staff and faculty.
*	Facilitate the day to day activities of the AMU by coordinating 
the work of the staff, recommending and implementing monograph 
acquisitions priorities, policies and procedures, and adjusting staff 
work loads and duties as necessary, and by solving any problems that 
arise during the ordering, receiving and cataloging of library 
materials.
*	Take a leadership role in acquiring library materials in an 
efficient and cost effective manner from foreign and domestic vendors 
and publishers. Select and evaluate vendors of library materials as 
appropriate.
*	Manage the acquisitions and cataloging functions associated with

the ULS' domestic imprints approval plan and identify and solve 
problems associated with the plan.
*	Initiate and monitor the loading of bibliographic record files 
associated with the various approval plans, and manage other 
bibliographic record file loads as necessary. 
*	Provide direction and guidance to the AMU staff for ordering 
expensive items, out of print, and non-book format materials.
*	Communicate with ULS bibliographers regarding issues and
problems 
with their monograph orders and standing orders.
*	Monitor encumbrances and expenditures on the ULS monograph and 
standing orders budgets, consulting with the Head of Technical Services,

the Coordinator for Collection Development or the Associate University 
Librarian as appropriate.
*	Direct the English language materials cataloging efforts of the 
AMU staff and faculty and consult with colleagues in Technical Services 
on problems and issues relating to cataloging. Monitor and adjust the 
cataloging assignments and workflow in the AMU as necessary.
*	Serve as a resource person for staff in Technical Services, the 
ULS and for other University personnel for issues relating to library 
materials acquisitions.
*	Provide statistical and other written reports on acquisitions 
activities as appropriate, and undertake other special duties or 
projects as assigned.
*	Participate actively in shared decision-making opportunities in 
Technical Services, the ULS and the University of Pittsburgh.
*	Attend meetings and serve on committees in the ULS and the 
University as necessary and appropriate.
*	Actively participate in relevant local and national
organizations.
*	Make significant contributions to the library profession and 
engage in professional development and community service activities as 
appropriate.

Required:  ALA-accredited MLS degree (or recognized foreign equivalent).

Significant managerial experience in a library unit (preferably a 
Technical Services unit in an academic library).  Three to five years 
experience with ordering, receiving and processing both book and non-
book materials from a variety of publishers and vendors. Significant 
knowledge about and experience with initiating and maintaining approval 
plans for foreign and domestic imprints.  Significant experience with 
instituting and monitoring vendor processing and cataloging services 
for approval plan and firm ordered materials. Knowledge of cataloging 
issues relating to monographs and demonstrated ability to initiate, 
monitor and adjust the cataloging workflow in a high-volume unit. 
Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage acquisitions and 
cataloging projects. The ability to communicate clearly and in a timely 
and effective manner.

Preferred:   Experience in dealing with out-of-print library materials 
vendors. Familiarity with the United States and United Nations documents

depository programs. Experience in monitoring allocations, encumbrances 
and expenditures in an online library system. Familiarity with Endeavor,

Inc.'s Voyager library management system.

perform their specific responsibilities.  Successful reviews at the
Third 
and Sixth Year of employment lead to the granting of Expectation of 
Continuing Employment.

Salary:  Commensurate with experience.  Comprehensive benefits package
