POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT:
HEAD OF ACQUISITIONS
UNIVERSITY OF HOUSTON LIBRARIES
Responsibilities: The Head of Acquisitions is responsible for managing
the
acquisition of all collection materials in all formats, including
electronic, for the Libraries. These activities encompass financial
accounts management; analysis of vendor performance and value-added
services; negotiation of agreements for materials in all formats;
approval
of invoices; and review and negotiation of license agreements. The Head
of
Acquisitions oversees the work of two librarians (the Serials
Coordinator
and the Electronic Resources Coordinator) and approximately 13 FTE staff
and student workers in all aspects of acquisitions in an automated
environment (Innovative). This position administers the acquisition of
electronic resources, firm orders, approval plans, gifts, and serials.
The
individual in this position monitors, analyzes, and evaluates
departmental
workflow to ensure effective and efficient use of resources and
expeditious
processing of orders and materials. The Head of Acquisitions analyzes
departmental needs for enhanced information technologies and actively
collaborates with Library Systems personnel on the design, enhancement,
and
implementation of both existing and new systems in support of
acquisitions
operations. He/she works closely with the Collections Coordinator, the
Collection Management Committee, subject librarians, and the Library
Business Administrator in managing the collections budget, as well as
with
the campus purchasing office.
Librarians hold academic ranks pursuant to the University of Houston
Librarians' Governance document. They are expected to develop a record
of
service and professional involvement.
Qualifications: Required: ALA-accredited Master's degree; knowledge of
publishing industry and the vendor trade, and trends in scholarly
communication; significant and relevant experience in an academic or
research library; supervisory experience; experience in budget
management;
excellent organizational and interpersonal skills, along with
demonstrated
excellent oral and written communication skills; willingness and ability
to
work within a team environment. Preferred: Knowledge of integrated
library
systems, especially Innovative. Experience with automated financial
management systems, especially PeopleSoft. Direct work experience with
vendors and publishers.
Salary: $60,000 to $68,000 expected hiring range, depending on
qualifications. Comprehensive benefits package; choice of retirement
programs including TIAA-CREF; tax-deferred annuity program available;
release time to take a class up to 3 hours/week; no state or local
income tax.
Library Information: This position will lead a reorganization effort
that
incorporates existing monographic acquisitions, electronic resources,
and
serials units into one department. With an annual collections budget of
nearly $7 million, the Libraries add approximately 25,000 titles
annually
and have about 18,000 active paid serial subscriptions per year
including
over 5,000 electronic journals.
The UH Libraries are currently engaged in an effort to identify and then
implement new strategic directions that will address organizational
opportunities and challenges for the next three years.
The UH Libraries are a member of the Association of Research Libraries,
the
Greater Western Library Alliance, and the Texas Digital Library
Alliance.
The Libraries hold over 2 million volumes. Total staff includes 48
