Employment Opportunity
Title: Acquisitions Librarian
Classification: Regular, Full-Time, Salaried
The Huntington Library invites applications and nominations
for the position of Acquisitions Librarian. Located about 15
miles northeast of downtown Los Angeles, The Huntington
was created in 1919 as an independent private library for
advanced scholarly research in English and American History
and literature, combined with public art galleries and botanical
gardens. Other areas of strength are 15th-century books, the
history of science and technology, and the history of books
and printing. The Library collections, comprising 357,000 rare
books, 321,000 reference books, 4 million manuscripts, and
large collections of historical prints, photographs and ephemera,
are consulted annually by 1,800 scholars from around the world.
Working under broad direction, supervises 4 full time acquisitions
staff and is responsible for managing acquisitions and serials
control activities and procedures for both rare and reference
materials in all formats. Performs liaison activities with staff in
other departments and with outside vendors. Reports to the Head
of Technical Services.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Supervises acquisitions staff. This includes hiring, training, and
conducting performance reviews, as well as revising records and
monitoring workflow; Manages the library's acquisitions budget in
consultation with the Head of Collection Development by
monitoring funds, including endowments and gifts; Manages
ordering, receiving, binding and fiscal control for serials in all
formats; Establishes and implements procedures for reviewing and
processing incoming gifts and unprocessed collections; In
collaboration with other staff members creates and documents
departmental policies and procedures, organizes and participates in
departmental and catalogers' meetings; Assists with maintaining the
library's automated integrated library system, including daily backups
and upgrades; Performs other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required: ALA-accredited MLS or equivalent. 2-3 years acquisitions/
and or serials experience, preferably in an academic or research library.
Demonstrated knowledge of acquisitions and collection development
practices, bibliographic description and the MARC format. Experience
with a bibliographic utility and an integrated library system (RLIN and
the Millenium ILS from Innovative Interfaces preferred). Preferred:
Supervisory experience. Working knowledge of at least one modern
European language. Strong written and verbal communication skills.
