Assistant Director for Collections Management
Library of Rush University Medical Center, Chicago
The Library of Rush University Medical Center is seeking an
enthusiastic,
innovative and experienced Assistant Director for Collections
Management
to lead and define policies, standards, and guidelines for content
acquisition & licensing, conservation/preservation, external/internal
information sources management, and daily operations providing access to
information assets. Located just west of the Loop in downtown Chicago,
Rush offers an ideal atmosphere for professionals to fulfill their

goals.
Job Responsibilities: Responsible for the successful planning,
organization, policy development, implementation and direction of the
Collection Development, Acquisitions, Cataloging, Serials, Interlibrary
Loan/Document Delivery and Medical Center Archives sections. Supervises
a staff of 3 professionals and 5 paraprofessionals. Sets clear
priorities in the allocation of resources and assignment of work to
ensure optimum use of personnel. Makes budget recommendations and
predictions for the Library's one million dollar publications budget.
Works with vendors in order to negotiate best business arrangements for
materials. Develops a cohesive collection of quality health information
resources based on the Medical Center's clinical, academic and research
priorities and makes systematic selection and de-selection decisions
regarding print and electronic publications in consultation with
appropriate staff and library users. Reports to the Library Director.
Required: Master's degree in Library Science and Information Science
from an ALA accredited Library school. At least five years professional
technical services experience in an academic setting, including
collection development responsibilities. Understanding of the
increasing role of technology in the delivery of information service.
Excellent interpersonal and communications skills. Demonstrated
understanding of mechanisms and strategies for print and electronic
collection management in the literature of the health sciences. Firm
understanding of the issues of access vs. ownership of information,
attendant copyright issues, and familiarity with library rights
regarding electronic contract requirements. Experience with computerized
integrated library systems. Demonstrated achievement based on creative
ability, analytical and problem-solving skills.
Preferred: Experience in an academic health science library and in
budget
planning.
Salary Range: $48,000-56,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
This is a non-tenured staff position. Rush has a comprehensive benefits

Although the oldest health sciences library in Chicago, the Library
maintains an up-to-date clinical collection of books and journals
(approx.
43,000 monographic titles, 2000 electronic serial titles, and a number
of
other electronic resources). Library staff work together to create a
dynamic environment that focuses on developing services to meet the
changing needs of its users. The Library serves the entire University
and Medical Center. There are 30 FT Library staff.
Rush University is the academic component of Rush University Medical

students
in Rush Medical College, the College of Nursing, the College of Health
Sciences, and The Graduate College.
